  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

HA!

~In Berea
ACT 17:10 As soon as it was night, the brothers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue.
11 Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

We live in Berea Ohio....so the verse really spoke to our hearts and we were so blessed to totally agree with the Greek Bereans and search the scriptures to find out if what WE were hearing from preachers etc...was true according to the Word.

for this is very necessary in these last days, when there are so many doctrines out there, that many do not conform to the Word of God...

if my message ever contradicts the Word, I want any and all to point it out...

Those who often claim a teaching is 'not' right... do not ever post any Scripture to prove it... so... if they are so sure, then they should have some passages to prove their point...

The Lord tells us to 'study to show ourselves approved of God'... and when we study the Word, we are 'approved'... for God wants that so much, for us to get into His Word, His message...

Yes I had a trio of dreams before christmas. I haven't seen anything about volcanos in the news over here. The closest I live to a volcanic region is Iceland, the last time it went off there, the air traffic here couldn't land for a few days because of ash high in the atmosphere. I've tried not thinking about the dream but it was so realistic, like I was really there, it keeps coming back.

Hey Vanilla.....I've lost track....are you the one who had the volcano dreams? Lots in the news as of late. Anything going on where you are?

I have noticed that many people who disdain the prophetic and/or spiritual renewal movements in the Church like to use the word Berean, but I believe they are using it wrongly. You see, in the scripture quoted above the Berean believers are compared to the Hebrews in Thessalonica who when they heard the Gospel - rejected it out of hand. The Bereans actually checked the Scriptures (the old Testament) to see if maybe it could possibly fulfill them rather than counter them.

I don't hear ppl talk about the Bereans much at all...but it wouldn't surprise me at all to find this term used icorrectly...so much nutty stuff has occured in the past 5 years. All I KNOW is, from the first time I saw that scripture it blessed me no end. God's word....the whole thing...is the bottom line to base every truth on. So I'm happy.

HOW is the term Berean used to dis the prophetic and revival/renewal movements?

well - people say that this scripture means that the Bereans didn't just accept revelations, implying that people were like the Bereans they would basically reject all modern prophecy as fruitcakey - basically they are claiming to be like the Bereans but they are actually like the Thessalonicans. Am I making this clearer or just muddier? I'm sorry......

Wow how nutty is that? The word was so clear as to how the Bereans behaved and someone took and twisted it to be EXACTLY the opposite. How very sad. No, you didn't make it muddy, I understand now...and thanks...but so sad, yet so typical.:sigh: :(

This link might help to explain what Bereans stand for.

David, I can't really say after browsing through that website and reading three of the newsletters why they call themselves Berean.... Are you familiar with that ministry? And what is your church's view (The Oasis) on modern-day prophetic ministry, charismatic renewal, issues like that....

Hi, I checked out The Berean Call site too...I only read the January newsletter....it was interesting and I do see why they consider themselves Bereans...they feel they have debunked false claims of Christianity....those who SAY they are Christians but do not follow scripture. It was a pretty strong article...and I would be very slow to disagree with what they had to say. They don't appear to be against prophecy...just against those who say "peace peace, when there is no peace" ;)

I've heard so many arguments about NT prophecy being only an encouraging word...and it is STUPID to believe we don't still need to be warned of our wayward ways. I want to be kept on THE path. Deception is a tricky thing and we need one another to keep one another straight.

I first noticed the Berean name on Chuck Misslers website but I didn't follow it through because it sounds quite severe, and as much as I really like the stuff that Chuck does, it goes way over my head when he starts using numbers. I'm not a number person! So I wanted to know what it was about before I investigated it.

Greetings... The Berean Call issues a monthly newsletter that is really informative. Also, their presentations are not nearly as convoluted as Chuck Missler gets on occasion.

In Acts 17:11 it says "Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true." Isn't the way to verify what somebody is stating, is to check God's words. This is the #1 way that God speaks to all of us.

it's just that many people like to skip over the "received the word with great eagerness" part - and then pretend that their skepticism is godly based on this scripture.

Wow, that's a good point Talitha....it never even occured to me...but you're right.
