  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ive run across this translation that to me is new. I think it's been out for a year or two so perhaps not new to others.

From my understanding they have:

A readable version that is just slightly more literal than the NIV, known as the Berean Study Bible.

A literal version, the Berean Literal Bible.

And a couple others.

What are your thoughts on it?

I thoroughly enjoy it! I love it's availability and the willingness of the translation committee to make it freely open for publications, etc.

I'd recommend to use an amplified or bible with strongs dictionary accessible for each word. I've had discussions with people online, and google translate "literally" translated what I said and literally translated their reply ... but it was obvious they didn't understand english.

In the same way, translating a sentence without translating the idioms involved and other literary devices leads to similar misunderstandings.

So when a translation claims to be "literal" I'm suspicious that they focussed to much on translating it word for word missing underlying meanings.

This is true.

Question, you say an amplified version. Do you like the newer Amplified version or the older one?

I haven't seen the newer one, the old one seemed sufficient. The point of a good amplified bible is to see all the possible (reasonable) translations of a single verse in one glance.

blueletterbible.org or the downloadable tool Online Bible (.net I believe) are good examples of study bibles where you can see the strong words and the words they are translated into in the rest of the bible.

I have a BSB. It's very similar to the Christian Standard Bible, but according to the publisher it's a bit more literal. I like reading it and I think it's a good translation. They are working on an interlinear translation, but I'm not sure when that's coming out.
