Because I am curious about speaking in tongues. I desire to speak in tongues daily. Operate in tongues. Because I desire that my prayer life may be more powerful and more personal.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm under the impression that you are already praying in tongues often. Right?

No Andrew. I speak in tongues only once during the time I pray for a girl. But later on, I try and did not seem like I can do it again. It can also that being at an Evangelical college environment, it is hard to find right time and place to try to operate tongues of prayer. Here this college, which I will keep it nameless, does not allow students to operate any spiritual gifts. Yet they are not against Charismatics. They just do not support any Charismatic views, but they only respect them.

Just let it flow, it comes from within your spirit, dont try you'll only confuse things, just open your mouth and began to make mumbling noises who cares how it sounds, the Holy Spirit will eventually curve it into tongues, believe by faith that speaking in tongues will just flow from out of you and it will, you wont even have to think about it, hope this helps, Let me lead you in a prayer say this Jesus you have come into my heart and when you came into my heart you brought with you the Holy Spirit, since the Holy Spirit is in me that means I can speak in tongues , so holy spirit baptize me with your fire and let tongues flow through me without trying , begin speaking by faith and just let it flow...

Lee,

You have received much good advise from everyone here.

I grew up in the Penticostal invironment and as I said before, I spoke in tongues from a very young age. However, for whatever reason, I thought the only time one could speak in tongues was win they felt the presense of the Holy Spirit really, really strong.

I did not realize that I could speak in tongues, in my prayer language any time I needed or desired. It was not until oh, maybe 5 or 6 years ago, that I learned differently.

And not only did I realize that I could do it frequently, but that I should do it more frequently. As a result of this increase in my prayer language I have seen tremendous changes in my walk.

While I was already fairly strong in my walk with God, I found that, for me anyway, this increase in my prayer language opened up my heart more to the dealings of the Holy Spirit. God began to open up old emotional wounds and began to clean me of things that I had buried deep inside of me.

I found that my whole life changed. It was not that I was bad or anything like that but the change was obvious.

When I first started going forward in this way, I remember that I would pass by a mirror and as I would look at my reflection, it was like I could see someone other than myself and I would think, "who is that?". This went on for several weeks. . .everytime I saw my reflection I would think "who is that?"

Then one day, when it happend again, this time the Holy Spirit answered, "Barbara, it's Me". I gasped and said, "what do You mean it's You. He said, "It's Me, looking out of your eyes". I cried, I never knew I could see Him. . .not like flesh and blood, but in the Spirit, I could see Him and His reflestion could be seen in my eyes.

I had people around me notice too. I can't remember how many people stopped me and asked me if I was in love. Another friend told me her husband had commented that everytime he saw me he felt convicted of his own walk with God. He told her it was like God being right there.

I'm not getting those kinds of reactions anymore but God is still moving strongly in my life. And I notice that the more I pray in tongues, the more I see happen in my behalf.

hi quaffer,

i noticed in your post you were mentioning that praying in tongues had cleared out old emotional wounds. I'm interested in that because I had been a Christian for awhile in university, but I was dealing with a lot of old issues and one night in particular I felt completely moved by the spirit and i felt this overwhelming powerful feeling of love in the room and within me, and i began speaking in what i thought was a different language, but i couldn't stop and I felt like I had just been cleansed of something. i was crying and laughing at the same time and I felt so much power. Anyways, I didn't even know what speaking in tongues was at this time, until my friend was explaining it to me months later.

I thought maybe I was experiencing something very strange and foreign, but since I have applied it to my life, i feel like this kind of prayer is the only way that addresses emotional issues that I can not consciously deal with.

love Michelle

Lee,

Thanks for explaining. Don't worry and certainly don't be discouraged. Everyone receives by grace thru faith -- not by being more 'special' or 'holy' or 'spiritual'.

If u think u received it once then 'lost' it, or if you think you have it already but can't operate, whatever, it does not matter! If you are a little confused, just bring the matter to God, settle it in your heart once and for all to ask and receive (i believe its already dormant you just need to stir it up) like what Saveveryone has suggested and start speaking! That's faith in action.

As for your college environment, it shld not hinder you. I'm not asking you to be a rebel and break rules, no, but you can always pray quietly by yourself under your breath. Note it's not the volume that matters. You don't have to shout it out, show off and freak others out.

I do it quitely on my great white throne at work (ie toilet), i do it driving to work, in front of my office PC, walking down the street, everywhere -- that's how we can "pray without ceasing"!

Stir up the gift my friend. But I wld encourage you to find a church or group that is charismatic. That's important for growth based on my belief that you cannot rise above your leadership. ie if the leadership of a church does not believe in the gifts, then its hard for the congregation to operate in the gifts either. The leadership takes the lead so it either limits or unlimits the congregation.

God bless

here's another benefit of praying in tongues

In the OT, they blew the trumpets and the walls of Jericho came tumbling down. David played the harp, and the evil spirits tormenting Saul had to leave!

What's the NC counterpart? Tongues!

1 Cor 14:
6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?

Recently, a recently born-again, Spirit-filled lady from my church was praying in tongues quietly under her breath at a bus stop during peak hour. She was just minding her own business and doing her own praying quietly.

Nearby, Toaist mediums/spiritist (this is Singapore) were conducting some spiritist ceremony near the bus stop.

To her surprise, one of the mediums made a beeline for her and then begged her to stop praying. She refused. (Why should she?) So, they left and did their business elsewhere!

katylees,

If you have asked Jesus into your heart to be your LORD and Savior, you have the Holy Spirit residing in you already. Therefore, you have the availability of speaking in tongues, so when you pray you can allow the Holy Spirit to speak through you as it describes in Rom 8:26 and pray in your heavenly language as described in 1 Cor 14:2 and 4.

Riddle for my tongue-speaking friends:

Why is it that in the Jewish 9-branch candlelabra (spell?), only the middle branch's candle can be removed at will to light up the other 8 branches?

Because the middle one is the "servant" candle, or Jesus?

Look,

Not really bro. Nine branches -- 9 gifts of the Spirit. The middle branch -- the only movable candle used to light up the other branches -- corresponds to tongues, the only gift we can operate at will.

IOW we 'light-up', 'stir up' or 'ignite' the other gifts of the Holy Spirit by regularly praying in tongues.

Bro Hagin used to teach too that praying in tongues is the/a key to the realm of the spiritual, to operating in the other gifts of the Holy Spirit.

In the OT, the Menorah candle stand was only 7-branch. That's becos only 7 gifts of the Spirit was in operation. IOW the OT prophets never spoke in tongues or interpreted tongues. The additional 2 gifts were only given under the NC -- which is why you now have the 9-branch Menorah/Candlelabra (spell?) prophesied by Isaiah.

Just a bit of OT trivia on tongues.

I like your explanation Quaffer, but I do have another question stemming from it.
I understand the quote from Romans about The Spirit praying for us in groanings that cannot be uttered...
but why is it needful that it should be audible? If it is done so that our rational/earthly mind can't interupt or get anything wrong (which in theory I understand) then why does it need to be heard by us also??
Thanks
Your Brother
John
PS: Please pray for me and my family. Some things happening to us that we can't control... please pray that the Lord teach me to wait on His grace/timing; and that He gives my wife peace.
oh... and I don't care How you pray, quietly... outloud, your native language or spiritual language...
it's all good.

Acts 8
"12But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13Simon himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw.
14When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. 15When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 17Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit."

The instance of belief and the Baptism in the Holy Spirit do not always occur at the same time. The Holy Spirit does not come in when we decide he has come. Those in the upper room didn't recieve the Holy Spirit at the moment they asked him to come; they prayed for days, and sought him. Yes, those who truthfully speak in tongues are filled with the Spirit. But no--the Spirit does NOT enter at the moment of belief, or at the moment one asks "Jesus, please come into my heart." If you want to recieve the Spirit, seek him fervently. Pray nonstop for days. If you commit a sin before you recieve the Spirit, run to Jesus immediately and repent. Ask forgiveness, and be cleaned continually. To say that we are to speak in tongues, and that everyone is filled with the Holy Spirit at the instance they believe is unbiblical. Do not be decieved into faking the gifts of the Spirit. Pray in Spirit and in truth, and if you have not recieved the gift of the Holy Spirit yet, CONTINUE to seek him, and ask those that have to pray with you and for you.

Blessings to all brothers and Sisters

There is a difference between being filled and being baptized in the Spirit.

If we are filled. . .the baptism, along with speaking in tongues is within our grasp. God would not give one of us a gift that would aid in our walk and deny it from another. If one is not speaking it, it is due to them either trying to talking in their known language at the same time as tongues (which is impossible), or they are not opening their mouth at all.

Agreed. Most charismatics believe the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a subsequent experience for the Christian. But the 2 events can take place simultaneously, as in Cornelius' case.

I have to disagree here. Those in the upper room were "tarrying" precisely becos Jesus told them to wait until the Spirit was poured out into the earth (a one-time event yet to happen). Now, this has already happened.

The Spirit HAS already been poured out. He is on the earth now. So there is no need for the Christian to wait for days or even months or years. That was the old Pentecostal belief -- waiting, tarrying, seeking, beggin, crying, repenting, trying to become holy enough to receive -- etc.

The WOF movt now knows that's not necessarcy becos He's already been given. We just have to receive by faith. Notice too in Acts, the other new believers never had to wait or seek to be Spirit baptised. It happened immediately when hands were laid.

One more benefit:

Being able to pray in tongues shows/reminds you how close you are to God -- IN THE HOLY OF HOLIES!

According to the Jewish oral law, once a year, on the Day of Atonement, the high priest enters the most holy part of the Tabernacle, called the Holy of Holies, where God's Spirit literally dwells.

He sprinkles the blood on the mercy seat, on the ground b4 the Ark (7 times, 7 being no. of perfection -- perfect standing b4 God), then burns the incense causing smoke to fill the room.

It is when he is enveloped in this sweet smelling incense smoke that he begins to speak in an unknown tongue! When he comes out of the Holy of Holies, he can no longer do it.

Today, praise God!, our ability to speak in an unknown tongues anytime we want proves to us that we are perpetually in the day of atonement, perpetually in the Holy of Holies in God's presence!!! So so cleaned by His blood that we stand perfect before God and His Spirit dwells in us! We are now the temple of God and His Spirit dwells with our spirit -- in the Holy of Holies -- our spirit part!

So, whenever the devil condemns you and tells you how far you are from God, just speak in tongues and tell him, Nope, still in the Holy of Holies with God!
