  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Any and every, basically. I mainly like dancing to gypsy music, as I'm a gypsy at heart, but hip hop is also really fun to dance to.
I guess some Christians would make a bit of distinction between - for example - gyrating to traditional folk music, and doing it in a hard rock environment.

I'm not clear how such a distinction works out necessarily.

It's mainly the intent behind the dance. Belly dancing was originally a way to express your femininity to other women in a group, or as a way to praise God, with the Hebrews. If it's use to provoke lust its not true belly dance. But if a wife wishes to dance for her husband its actually very beautiful.

Interesting; I guess you would classify Miriam dancing in the Old Testament, as this?

I don't know enough about it to be certain, but does true belly dancing involve showing the navel? (Pardon my ignorance; and I had not thought of Miriam in this particular way, either.)

That is the very same dance. Belly dance isn't the official name, i forgot what it was, actually.

Not traditionally. The gals had their torso covered, it was actually in the heathen communities that gals started wearing less and less clothing.

I was thinking of Miriam in Exodus 15.20.
Maybe you're familiar with the passage.

I am, actually. That's where the basis of my argument to belly dance comes from. People have called me a stripper for belly dancing, but I point out that verse and even talk about David dancing in nothing but underwear with joy before the Lord. And that usually gets my point across.

Well, I know anyway that many young women customarily snow their navel and midriff if they go to a discotheque; I'm not sure that this in itself is Biblical. You would I suppose say that it's context and intent that is significant.

Women are called to be modest. Among the company of other women I don't see a problem with showing a bit of belly. But where there are men it's considerate to cover your stomach.
I agree; and so I guess when you refer to belly dancing you're not necessarily talking about showing the navel, etc.

Beachwear is totally different of course. It's a matter of context, I guess.

Oh not at all! The belly is just the core of the dance, where all your movements come from. It's your center.
I see; it's a matter of terminology, really.

Navel bars do seem to be hugely popular of course; and if covered even more widespread than people realize, but thanks for clarifying what you meant.
