  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I did it once and was humiliated because it was supposed to be a private class with just me and the teacher well come to find out the teacher was a man! And I had to wear a shirt that showed midriff and do these horrific dance moves , never again lol.

It's something I'd love to try, I love how it celebrates feminity, but being a ballet dancer I've always thought I was too thin to feel comfortable in a class. A Belly Dancing class just recently started at the gym where I work, so God willing, I'll be able to try it soon :).

I love to bellydance. Being a dancer my whole life, I never expected it to be difficult, but it is!! It is a dance that celebrates being a woman and actually was only performed by women for other women so they could express themselves in a male dominated society.
The music is wonderful and it is such good exercise. You use muscles you never thought you would use ever!!

The Neena and Veena videos are a good place to start.

I think Middle Eastern dance is incredibly beautiful. I studied it when I was younger, but I found it was something I couldn't really tell people about because of the misperception that it was somehow associated with stripping or other objectionable things. Even recently, when I was taking a ballroom dance class with some of my friends& our husbands, some of them noticed some flyers for a bellydance class being offered at the same studio, and started laughing at the idea. So for those of you who are studying bellydance, do you have that problem? How do you handle it (especially if you go to a very conservative church)? Or are you a "closet" bellydancer? (I'm not concerned with the origins and history of the dance, whether or not it was really performed just for other women, etc., only with the present misconception of it as something on the sleazy side.)

I've just started learning. It's a lot of fun :)
I do hate the "sleazy" misconception. I don't know where it comes from really (there are other traditional dances that aren't considered objectionable)...maybe because the more well-known costumes show the midriff, and for some reason people think that's a horrible thing. I don't know, I don't get it. I wish people weren't so ignorant, but in the meantime I really don't mention it to anybody.

ballet develops your movement..belly dancing takes lower body work, almost a contracting movement..I gave up:confused: ..then again, the woman that taught me was terrible with her english.
