Well I don't think the believer is doomed to live the rest of their lives alone either.

I sometimes wonder if there is a difference in God's eyes when it comes to a marriage of two devout believers verses those that do not.

Yes, they may get married in a church, not because of belief, but tradition.

I also do not think anyone has to stay in abusive marriage.

But these is a whole new subject I guess.

Michie, Christianity includes an instability clause: "with men this is impossible, but all things are possible with God". If one is married to an (un)believer who beats you and your children, it is best to pray to God that this abuse will stop. God's solution will be 100% effective, but it may not necessarily be a divorce. Or maybe it will.

Basically, resting on God's hip is our first and last resort in all times of desperation.
