  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You can be righteous and holy by not sinning, and doing what the Bible says? Right?

And obtaining eternal life is obeying everything Christ taught us? Right?

I know stupid question.

No. One can not be righteous, period.
We are NOT ABLE to obey what Christ teaches us.

It is hard to always be righteous because we are human. Christ is always righteous and he helps us to follow him.

"Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." - Matthew 7:21-23

And we can know from Scripture what the will of the Father is.

"For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.

And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day." - John 6:38-40

"And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." -
John 3:14-18

Jesus is our Sabbath, we rest in Him and His finished work by faith. (Hebrews 4)

We do not earn our salvation, it is a gift, not a reward for the good things we have done.

After were saved, born again, having received the Holy Spirit, then, as His disciples, we follow after Him and do the good works He has prepared for us.

Also, read Romans 4 and Galatians 5.

God bless.

Whoa! Slow down Rambo!

Define "sin" by the writers actual word which is hamartia which basically means your going the wrong way--amiss, wayward.

Righteous is going the right way. Righteousness in life is a multifaceted jewel of immense beauty! Sure, it has a moral code of conduct but, that is just one facet! How I cook dinner tonight is also the pursuit of righteousness. Because, God made everything to exist according to His own standard which is righteousness. Therefore, everything exists as a challenge to us to be magnificent in the all things of our lives!

So when I make dinner, I must analyze the target food; heat source; timing; other flavoring ingredients; everything. If I do it just right, I can present you with a world class meal! If I fail, well.... I'll try again until I get it just right.

Everything that is beautiful is righteous! Everything that works is righteous! Everything that tastes good is righteous! Everything else sucks! Everything else is broken or ineffective!

When we pursue the righteousness of our Creator, we are pursuing the very best of everything which He has made to function perfectly/righteously--for our benefit!

You then have a major head start over anyone whom does not, can not understand this!

We learn from it how to be the best wife, husband, mother, father, son, daughter, employee, employer, scientist, comedian, doctor, lawyer, etc, and most all, friend!

"Obtaining eternal life" is understanding that your life with God is right here, right now where you live! The word erroneously translated as "eternal" is aiOnios and means: breath-being-belonging-to-her zOE-life(feminine) right here, right, now.

If you pursue the zOE-life of God's promised abundance, right here, right now, given through seeking the perfection of the righteousness in the all things of His creation and just follow Him, the Great Shepherd, as He prepares and gives opportunity, the only thing you should concern yourself with the after-life is hoping He has your correct crown size! :)

Hi Introverted, and welcome to CF!

Actually you will get a variety of answers, depending on how people define words. And there are no stupid questions. :)

Our Tradition teaches that God doesn't just look at us with rosy glasses, but that He actually desires to heal us from the effects of sin. And that involves real transformation, not just a legal contract.

Being "holy" means being set apart for God, and yes, we can dedicate ourselves to God. We can be righteous in the sense that Abraham was righteous, as well as Job, Zacharias, Elizabeth, King David, and many others. Righteous doesn't mean never having done ANYthing wrong. It means seeking to do, and actually doing, right, as much as one is able.

You have to be careful though. Yes, it is expected if we hope for eternal life with God, that we will love Christ, and follow what He has taught us to do. But we don't EARN eternal life in this way. We can do nothing to earn it. It is a gift of God. But those who are on the path, who follow Christ, will be doing those things and be changed to become more like Him.

However, we are still in bodies of flesh. We will be tempted until we stand before Christ. While those who follow Christ can sometimes appear to do more and more good, and no longer are seen to do anything wrong, if they progress that far in becoming like Christ, they will still realize they fall short of Christ Himself, so really, to some degree we all sin (which means to miss the mark) while we are in our bodies.

But it's ok. We ask forgiveness, get back up, try to do better. And ask forgiveness again for whatever the next failure is. That is the Christian life.

And if we live a life seeking to become like Christ, following Him, cooperating with the grace of God, we have every hope in His mercy and friendship through eternity.
