From what I understand, Calvary Chapel is a charismatic denomination, and like most churches in that traditional, believes that being filled with the Holy Spirit is different from conversion.

Is this correct? Can anyone explain to me how it works?

A couple instances:

Acts 8:14-17 LSV
14 And the apostles in Jerusalem having heard that Samaria has received the word of God, sent Peter and John to them,
15 who having come down prayed concerning them, that they may receive the Holy Spirit—
16 for as yet He was fallen on none of them, and only they have been immersed—into the Name of the Lord Jesus;
17 then they were laying hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

Acts 19:1-6 LSV
1 And it came to pass, in Apollos being in Corinth, Paul having gone through the upper parts, came to Ephesus, and having found certain disciples,
2 he said to them, “Having believed, did you receive the Holy Spirit?” And they said to him, “But we did not even hear whether there is any Holy Spirit”;
3 and he said to them, “Into what, then, were you immersed?” And they said, “Into John’s immersion.”
4 And Paul said, “John, indeed, immersed with an immersion of conversion, saying to the people that they should believe in Him who is coming after him—that is, in the Christ—Jesus”;
5 and they, having heard, were immersed into the Name of the Lord Jesus,
6 and Paul having laid [his] hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, they were also speaking with tongues, and prophesying,

Some hold that all receive the Holy Spirit when they are born again, but they may not be "filled" until some later point.

From my experience with the Calvary Chapel "movement", I think you are in error about its being a "denomination" and also about its being like "most churches in that [charismatic] tradition" SavedByGrace3 says "Some hold that all receive the Holy Spirit when they are born again, but they may not be "filled" until some later point." I think that's true of what the people I have interacted with believe, but I have never experienced attendees speaking in tongues in the different Calvary Chapel assemblies that I attended. I think Acts 2:41-42 is closer to the discription of the Calvary Chapel style. More like an ongoing simple Bible study.
Acts 2:41-42 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

Here is the born again experience
John 4:14 (KJV)
14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Here is the baptism of the Holy Spirit foretold
John 7:37-39 (KJV)
37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

Luke 24:49 (KJV)
49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

In acts 2 they received the power of the Holy Spirit with evidence of speaking on tongues. On at least three occasions in Acts believers received the promise similarily, and on one occasion they prophesied, on another occasion Simon saw them receive something but the bible is silent as to what it was he saw. When your born again the Holy Spirit indwells in you, when you are baptized in the Holy Spirit though it overflows in you. The overflow is to help you be a greater witness to others.

Hi, being filled with the HS, i would say even is the meaning of life, the purpose, and the second most important thing to do after believing in Jesus.
He is going to take you somewhere, treat with you, discipline you to be what he wants.
People that say you get filled when you believe are accepting defeat of not getting the HS, without even trying with a simple lie, is horrible.
