I want to help my friends this year; however, I must consider scripture first. Perhaps this year is not the best year to help them.

How do I remove the beam from my own eye?

What is an example of a beam and a speck?

Looking for some insight...

MERRY CHRISTMAS +++

The message is that your beam is thousands of times greater than the speck.

Pride, like feeling big and grown up in smoking 3 packs a day cigarettes, (for whatever reason), even though it causes such widespread harm, (just now noted on tv commercial)...
vs
picking on someone else who unwittingly eats a soyburger (the speck in their eye).

I see.

Does this mean a job like life coaching is not suitable for a Christian?

no it can be, provided he/she is repenting and always turning to the Lord. actually, I can think of no better life coach.
