Besides the Beach Boys, I would say Dick Dale is probably the quintessential beach-music artist.
Thanks, Dephiki, but while the Beach Boys and Dick Dale definitely do conjure images of the beach,
beach music is something else.
Beach music refers to a kind of music popular in the American Southeast and Gulf Coast area that combines elements of R&B, rock and roll, blues, doo wop, country music, and even ska and reggae (although in its purest form, it's just pretty much R7B based) and has two signature dances, the shag and the stroll.
Although it's often called
Carolina beach music because it originated in Myrtle Beach in the late 50s, early 60's, it's equally popular along the Gulf Coast, where I grew up.
