  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

BC for controlling periods

Okay guys, this is not meant to be a controersial topic nor is it a question about how the Catholic Church views BC... it is only about finding a solution. Thanks in advance.

-------------------------------

I have a friend who has major problems with her periods in that they are EXTREMELY irregular and painful. a couple years ago she started on birht control which made them totally regular and not painful. SHe said it was the first time she had ever had "normal" periods that didn't give her such horrible pains and occur so irregularly.

Well, she is getting married soon and she doesn't want to use bc once married for moral reasons (since most bs have the potential to abort a fertilized egg) so she stopped using it (becuase it takes a few months to get out of your system completely and she wants to be "clean" lol) but now (after a few months) she is back to the unpredictable very difficult and painful.

here's the question:
Does anyone else know of any good alternatives to regulating periods?

Her doctor said there's really nothing else.

Personal experience definitely welcome.

If she wants to be sure that a fertilized egg is not aborted she could use a barrier method while she is on the pill. But if she wants to avoid bc altogether and manage her condition, she might want to look for a practitioner of natural medicine. Beware: the perscription may include a macrobiotic vegan diet but it might be worth it. I notice a huge difference in my body cycles when I avoid meat and dairy.

Actually the best solution is for her to have a baby. I'm not kidding. I used to have periods so bad that every month I'd call in sick. That's 12 days off a year that I really didn't wanna take off. I'd be doubled over in pain and throwing up etc.

I remember after having Emily I begged my husband to stay home with me to help me out if I got my period. Well I got it the first time and it was a peace of cake!!!!

Of course now at 40 it's a different story altogether with hotflashes and such but that's a story for another time in another section.;)

Yep, best cure is having a baby.

My wife before we were married had the same problem, being doubled up in bed for two days a month. The church said it was ok for her to use the pill before marriage because of the condition and there was nothing morally wrong with that type of medical intervention in her pre marital state.

After marriage the problem returned, she became pregnant 8 months later and the problem cured itself. It hasn't recurred in 12 years. Children, the gift that keeps on giving (sometimes headaches ;) )

Peace and God Bless

First "ortho tricyclen" (or other drugs used for birth control) are improperly labeled as "birth control" when used for other purposes. Someone taking these drugs who is not engaging in intercourse is not "on birth control." She is on a specific drug that can also be used for the purpose of birth control.

The issue, as you rightly point out, is what to do when entering into marriage, where we can expect sexual union. I think it's important to remember a couple of things here. First, God is bigger than us. He has the ability to make things right when we cannot. His ways don't always make sense, but we know from Scripture and from our own experience that His ways are the proper ways.

I'd suggest she talk with her doctor about her beliefs and state (not suggest) she will not take drugs that prevent conception. Her doctor should have other options for her. While contraceptives might be a common answer, they are not the only medical answer.

Hotflashes at 40? Say it isn't so?

Michelle

Hotflashes , nightsweats, moodswings, periods that last 2 weeks one month and that skip another month.

Started with just hotflashes two years ago and increased as the months and years went on.

Yep, this cured two women I know with this same problem, one of them was mys sister.. After she had her child, she became regular and it was a far less painful experience, in fact from the sound of it she was pretty much pain free after the birth of her daughter.. :)

I read the thread title wrong:

At first I did a double take when I thought it read:

BC for controlling people.

But doesn't birth control contain hormones that change a woman's body and disposition? Don't they affect a woman mentally, and hence spiritually?

All drugs have side effects that is why they have drug control numbers.
And all drugs do a number on our organ systems.
They are not "natural".

Yes, but natural is not always the best. There are many drugs that do many wonderful things. I'm sure that there is a better explanation out there but I believe that it is not immoral to use the drugs for medical reasons - it may not necessarily be what they're generally for but the side effects can be medically beneficial. Eh, I'll look tomorrow. It's too late here.

Have any of you sought the help of a preventative physician?

I had periods so bad that I ended up in the emergency room more times than I can think. I used to faint frequently too.

Then I went to an M.D. who specialized in preventative medicine where a complete blood panel with one for thyroid function was ordered.

I was placed on 0.5 grain of Armor Thyroid. Then I was told to take500 mg of Magnesium and 50 mg of B6 before bed. In the morning I took stress B vitamins.

My extremely painful periods and anemia from heavy flows and clotting subsided dramatically.

Birth control pills use hormones to prevent the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland from releasing the hormoes that cause ovulation. This addition of hormones can have other effects. In this case, the side effect of most concern is an increased risk of cardiovascular problems.

Just to add, I've never had a laparoscopy but I've had a physical exam for the purpose of determining the source of my pain and they said there was no need of a lapa to tell them anything further, that I don't have endometriosis

~ ~

And you never want a laparoscopy either - they are HORRIBLE.

If there is no extraordinary cause such as endometriosis or unhealthy, low body weight these things might help. Reduce caffeine intake (yes that includes chocolate!) at least a week prior to the start of the period and increase water intake. Also taking an aspirin a day for a few days beforehand will also help. Increase protein intake a day or so before hand also helps many people.

My mom started me on birth control at the age of 12 or 13 to regulate my periods, because I would have massive cramps and just keel over in pain. So it was the only thing that they could do... there is a medication out there that actually helps with the pain part of the period... its called Naproxen. It is an anti inflamitory pill.

I know that sounds funny, but I took myself off of birth control a few years back, and begged my doctor (Who was totally against my decision to take myself off because of how wicked my time of the month would get), for something that would at least take the pain away, and she gave me a RX for Naproxen. It works amazingly. You can also just get ALIEVE.. :) It has Naproxen in it, just take two pills instead of one. :)

Hope this helps!

I'd have to agree that having a baby is not always the solution. My sister has 2 kids and has always suffered terribley with her cycles. She has taken so many pain killers over the years that the doctor finally decided to remove her uterus. Her uterus was tilted and that was the cause of all the problems. She recently had this done and feels much better.
A natural herb that has helped me is Dong Quai which has been used by Asians for years. It isn't always effective...but combined with a good diet it alleviates a lot of the moodiness, cramps etc.
