Then when I got into Lord of the Rings, I found out that Zeppelin had a lot of Tolkien references, and I got back into Led Zeppelin after not really listening to them for about 8 years.
Yup. Everytime that I watch or read LotR, I want to listen to Zep. Everytime that I listen to Zep, I want to go to Middle-Earth. It's a vicious cycle.

Farmhouse, Gin & Juice, Limb by Limb, Waste, Weigh, Rift, Lawn Boy, Marijuana, Sweet Jane (Live; 8-8-98)
Some pretty good songs there!
I used to hate Farmhouse but lately its grown on me. Still not one of my favorites though. Gin & Juice is actually not by Phish, some idiot thought it was Phish and labeled it like that on his mp3s, then it spread through Napster and Kazaa....
Limb by Limb is an awesome song! Waste is really cool, another one thats grown on me. Weigh is pretty freaky lyrically, pretty funny, nice to sing along to. I like the music in that one.
Rift is just awesome. At the New Years 2002/2003 concert they absolutely rocked that song!! The beginning of it is awesome, I like the bluegrass style bass riffs in it, and the lyrics are really, really cool "The passion that sparked me one terrible night, it shocked and persuaded my soul to ignite!!"
LawnBoy is pretty cool if you're into jazz/blues. And it has a funny meaning if you can figure it out :).
I've never heard a song called "Marijuana" before...which is interesting, I've heard almost every song they have. Sweet Jane is cool, I think its a cover from the 70s.

For some awesome songs try to get these: You Enjoy Myself, Stash, Run Like an Antelope, Punch You in the Eye, Piper, 2001, Lizards, Harpua, First Tube, Esther, Sand, David Bowie, Divided Sky....ahh the list goes on and on!!!

Thats exactly what I did last time I read LOTR!!! I made a playlist of: Ramble On, Misty Mountain Hop, No Quarter, Four Sticks, Battle of Evermore, Over the Hills and Far Away.....and I'd just put that on a loop while I read the books.
They really have a Lord of the Ringsy sound to them - a Middle Earth sound - It might have to do with the fact that they often tune their guitars down, and Plant's voice, and that they're just amazing!!
If you haven't seen this site yet, check out http://www.ledtolkien.com

It would have been cool if Peter Jackson had included Zeppelin in the soundtrack...!!

That's explains why it sounds so different! I don't think that 'Marijuana' is by Phish. It doesn't really sound like their style. It's done on acoustic guitar and is a really funny and cool song though! My favorite song so far is Rift.

My playlist right now is a Phish/Bjorn Lynne/Stereolab/The Cure/Sonic Youth mix. It's actually a nice mix as far as I'm concerned. If you haven't done it yet, go listen to some Bjorn Lynne! Yes, I'm still plugging Bjorn.

I've seen that Zep/LotR side before. It's interesting stuff.

What is: "Che spetti, 'na carozza?" Usually with my french and spanish I can figure out a lot of italian. Something about what am I doing in the...what the heck is a carozza? I have no idea.

Ciao

Yeah, Rift IMO is the best song on that list.

Will do. What sort of music is he?

Its probably tough to figure out because its an idiom from a southern Italian dialect. My grandmother used to say it a lot. You say it when someone has to do something or go somewhere, but theyre just waiting around, not taking any action. In modern English it would translate to something like "What are you waiting for, a limousine?" (Like, get off your lazy *** and get going!" "Che spetti"= what are you waiting for, 'na = dialect form of "una" = "a", and carozza is a carriage, which in modern terms would be like a limousine, nobody rides in a carraige anymore :)

Blackwasp?
To be honest, I had never really listened to them, but I remember nadro recommending Heroin (or so i think). I'm listening to it right now, and I have to admit it is pretty good. I like their sound, very wierd, but it comes together very nicely.

Oh man! I just downloaded several VU songs and, after listening to them, I went to half.com and bought their 5 disk box set. Wow nadro, you couldn't have been more right about them! Add them to my fav. bands list!

Hahaha cool man! Yeah that box set is great, I just got it for Christmas actually. Alot of interesting stuff. Which songs did you download?

P.S. If you really like them that much, I can probably give you a bunch of other good bands that have been directly influenced by them. Television, Pere Ubu, and Sonic Youth are just a few examples.

I downloaded Heroin, Satellite of Love, Stephanie Says, Sweet Jane, Such a Perfect Day, Pale Blue Eyes, Femme Fatale, and Sunday Morning. The songwriting is beautiful!

Oddly enough, I was checking out Sonic Youth at the same time. Some of their songs were alright, but I'm not completely sold on them yet. I don't really like the punk influences.

I'll check out the other bands. Thanks!

Yeah, there are some beautiful songs in there...I like Sunday Morning and Sweet Jane out of the ones you listed. However, Heroin is the only one of the songs you listed that are indicative of their early music, which I consider their best. The early stuff is much less accessible, and I would say completely different than anything else that was being made at the time. While their later stuff is good, it is not the music that truly set them apart IMO. But you'll see that soon, when you get the box set :D . Then you can get the real VU, with "I'm Waiting For the Man," "Venus in Furs," "The Black Angel's Death Song," and especially "Sister Ray."

Sonic Youth is a tough nut to crack, definitely. Alot of their music is just straight noise. But what's wrong with the punk influences? ;)

No problem, man. I live to convert people to the bands that I like ;)

Punk rose as a statement against classic rock bands of the 70s. Punk was purely about noise, the musicianship aspect was completely dropped. Although punk started off as a movement, it became too safe with bands like Green Day and Blink 182. Modern punk is nothing but whiney kids who have nothing real to say.

I wouldn't say punk is about noise, or at least not noise in the SY sense. But man, there you go again dissing a whole genre. Maybe you should dig deeper than Green Day and Blink 182 (oh and BTW, that is sad that you compare those 2, GD is much better). There is some very good punk out there.
