hey,
I'm getting a bass for christmas but don't know how to play...any of you veterans got some advice for a beginnner? I know some of the basics kinda, I play a trebal cleff instrument and have forgotten the bass cleff, I think it's GBDFA for lines and ACEG for spaces but i'm really not sure...could someone clarify that for me?

i reccomend finding a jazz band like at your shcool or somewhere to play in...or just read some jazz music, that stuff helps like crazy, walking the bass makes your fingers strong and gives you good practice moving around and stuff, dont use a pick...boo...you can do alot more with your fingers...and play kool stuff...yea

HEY!!! I LOVE BASS!!

That is, double bass, or contrabass, or contrebass, or upright bass, or string bass, or whatever. That's what I play :), none of this electric bass or bass guitar.

But maybe I can help...

When I first started playing bass, (!) I was given a bow and shown how to hold, and a bass and shown how to hold it. And I was told to move the bow against the string (I think) and where to put my fingers to play notes. I was also given a books of songs. So I started jamming away. I took lessons after a year of playing or so, and I have played for over 3 years now. Last year I got 3rd in state for high school solos (solos is a palindrome!!!) So I guess it worked for me. GOD GIVES AWESOME GIFTS TO THOSE WHO ASK HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is kind of wierd, I don't have any friends that I see often who play double bass, but most of them play electric. Either I'm lonely, or I stand out... meh

Anyways, I hope I helped!! I'll answer any questions as best as I can too!!! ARGGHHHH!

Love from Thwingly!

Hey Tsaxgurl317,
Go get a vision!! What are you going to do with your bass skills?? Then, once you have set a long-term goal, get the desire in you to do it, and work hard (enjoy it too)! I look back at when I was so bad at double bass... ugh, never want to go there again, with any instrument... but I might have too, hopefully not! Oh well, have fun!! Pray for talent so that it may glorify God!
