Great thread!

In my opinion, the apex of the Baroque period may be found in Bach's B minor Mass and his St. Matthew Passion. This period coincides with, what we Lutherans call, "The Age of Orthodoxy". This setting of the Mass is very much, like Bach, Lutheran. During this period, in Lutheran Churches the "Ordanaries" of the Mass were commonly sung in Latin as they are here.

The St. Matthew Passion, on the other hand is sung in German.

I have also included some Bach played by a Canadian, the late Glenn Gould of Toronto. While much admired and acclaimed as a musician for his interpretations of Bach, he was nuttier than as squirrel-turd. As he became older he became more and more paranoid and became a recluse; in his last years he would not perform publicly but only make recordings.

If you like Baroque music, please take the time to enjoy.

Circa 1980 I was in Colonial Williamsburg and visited the Music Instrument maker's shop. Hanging on the wall were several string instruments that looked like cellos with frets and 6 strings. Being a guitar player I was intregued. I found out they were Violas da Gamba - popular during the renascence and all thru the Baroque era; but died out in the Classical period.

I have been a huge fan of that instrument ever since. I own 2 - a treble and a 7 string full consort bass. I just ordered CDs of works of Christopher Simpson (early Baroque) from his famous book "The Division Viol - the Art of Playing to a Ground;" and several Gamba pieces from Telemann.

I don't recall who it was, but someone called Back the 5th Evangelist.:)

I thiink that was Prince Leopold who had Bach in his employ from 1717 to 1723.

J.S. Bach was one of the most blessed composers in all human history.

True - but he was in a goodly company of incredible composers who were all strong believers: G.P. Telemann, G.F. Handel, A. Vivaldi, ....

Telemann was God-father to several of Bach's children.
