  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So far the only thing I am getting from everyone response is Christianity is a fraud. No one can give me a intelligent response. Its like your trying to speak to a kindergartener. I have been studying and reading for 18 years. This is extremely frustrating. I know alll about Greek/Hebrew definitions and meanings. Please stop wasting my time with all this fake nonsense you have been getting from your pastor. People who actually read the bible need to respond to this

well that's a false statement .
perhaps you simply have not liked the replies you have been given - so you reject them .
and you really should change your icon if you are not what it says you are ..it states that you are a Jehovahwitness

"Shem" is the eldest son of Noah so your question is nonsense!

technically yes .. but i suspect thats not what progmonk is referring to
im not sure what is being referred to yet .

i know some point out that the genealogy of Joseph (mary's husband) can be traced back to Shem - maybe hes headed into the topic of the flood /baptism by water etc .... guess we will find out

"Shem" is the eldest son of Noah, not technically, but in biblical reality. The transliteration "shem" is translated in English as "name" in most occurrences. For what purpose would anyone writing English insert "shem" instead of using the English "name"? If he is going for "a rose by any other name" type approach, say it; do not write what is nonsense to an Englishman using an English dictionary rather than a Hebrew-English concordance.

*sigh* the problem with this discussion as with any discussion that centres around the English word "name" theologically is that quite often the person making the argument will limit the usage of the word "name" to purely be about the word by which someone or something is known rather than the way in which the word שֵׁם is used throughout Scripture thereby making it such that when it comes to possibly conflicting passages such as are in the OP a big deal is made out of them. It's a common Cult tactic used by both the JWs and the Sacred Name Movement.

BRITANICA ENCYCLO. – The baptismal formula was changed from the name of Jesus Christ to the words Father, Son & Holy Ghost by Catholic Church in the second century. 11th Edition, Vol 3, page 365-366.

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

Acts 20:29
2 Timothy 4:3

These scriptures help me understand that the right way has most definitely been watered down. God knows our hearts. I have found peace by focusing on my own heart condition. I have found this to be the most productive use of my time. I have wasted much of my personal time arguing over formalities.

Phillipians 1:6 He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ. Knowing that it was God who begun the work in my life I don't need to waste my time worrying over the words spoken over me while participating in an act of obedience.
