  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast." - Ephesians 2:8-9

"That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved." - Romans 10:9-10

"and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ . . ." - 1 Peter 3:21

I would say then, no. It is the faith in Jesus that saves you, and if it weren't for Him nobody could be saved. We must still be baptised out of obedience to Christ, but it should be a declaration of the new faith within our hearts. Baptism should never be seen as escaping death. Then it becomes an act rooted in fear, not faith. God doesn't deal in panic.

Also remember the thief who died on the cross next to Jesus. Jesus told him that today he would be with Him in paradise. The thief never had a chance to get baptized, but Jesus said he would be in heaven with him.

I totally agree with twistedsketch! All you have to do to be saved is believe in Christ.

Hello,
I was just wondering if you had to get baptized to be saved.
Please just give me some bible verses with some explanations. Thank you!!

MY DEAR SISTER,

Although Baptism does not lead to Salvation -- Salvation DOES lead to Baptism. Baptism is our first act of obedience to our Lord once we come to Him for Salvation. It is the external evidence of what has happened inside of use through our surrender to our Lord.

There are a multitude of Scriptures teaching this truth. Several examples are:

"He who believes AND IS BAPTISED will be saved;"(Mk16:16)

"Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and LET EVERY ONE OF YOU BE BAPTISED in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins;"(Acts 2:38)

"And now why are you waiting? ARISE AND BE BAPTIZED, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord."(Ac 22:16)
etc.

Salvation without obedience is NOT possible, and trying to "spiritualize" an obvious concrete direct command such as was given by our Lord--"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, BAPTIZING THEM IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER AND OF THE SON AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT."(Mt 28:19)--is, to say the least, a most dangerous thing to do, Spiritually speaking.

My advice would be TO GET BAPTIZED A.S.A.P.!

MUCH LOVE IN CHRIST,
ephraim

All we must do to be saved is believe in God. We can not believe in God unless we are baptized with the baptism from Jesus -- which is the one of the Holy Spirit. The baptism of John is useful, but not necessary, it is Jesus Christ crucified which saves us -- that work and that work alone is the one we should trust in for salvation.

As far as bothering to look up these verses, that is actually your responsibility. Many people quote sentences by verse from the Bible and take them out of context in this way. But, the Holy Spirit brings to rememberance the truth.

How did the Apostles quote Scripture, did they give lines and verses? But, it was said of the ones who were careful that they looked up all of the matters themselves to see what was true and what was not.

Why should you want anyone to take that away from you?

Well, actually, I had looked up those verses, but I wasn't quite sure about them. I think that I just needed clarification. I just realized that I probably should have put that in my original post. Sorry.:sorry:

And btw-thanks guys!!

The theif on the cross who Jesus said would be with him today in paradise...didn't have time to be baptized...but as beleivers that have time...after being saved. they should follow in beleivers baptism only because it is an outward sign to the world of an inward change and we are buried in His death and raised to newness of life.

Everybody starts out this question asking something in particular, with an assumption. If your question is whether baptism is a prerequisite to God saving you, then no. It's not. It's not an essential as something you have to do before God will save you, or something you have to undergo to get God to save you, something necessary in that sense.

Someday you'll buy something expensive, or get a loan, or get married. When you do, you will be asked to sign a contract. Is signing the contract necessary to owning a car? Does the ink cause you to buy the car, or is the paper necessary to having the car?

Not really.

But if you don't sign that paper with ink, I can tell you that normally, you find it much, much tougher to own a car. You're not entering into the agreements people are proposing in good faith.

The Apostles have said your good faith relationship with God has a connection to your baptism (cf Rom 6:1-4). It's murky exactly what that connection is. It's not cause/effect (water can't make you drink the Spirit, or actually wash away your sins). But it's not simply symbolic, either. It seems to be more like a signature on a contract. You're visibly inducted into the Kingdom of God, you come under an agreement where God vows to be your God.

Can God be your God without the agreement? I'm sure He can. But God's specified this kind of signing ceremony -- baptism -- to start off the agreement.

bottom line you must be baptized...however the example of the theif...he did not have time..seeing how he was hanging there to die...i don't beleive in those types of situations that if you don't get baptized god will reject you...but now...you have learned that you must be baptized...you must obey and be baptized.

I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior on December 23rd. I did in the presence of a very dear friend and her Pastor. After I finished praying and accepting the Lord, the Pastor told me that it was time to be Baptized as an outward expression and to seal my commitment to the Lord. He did it then and there, and I could feel the Holy Spirit touching my soul.

Just do it!!!!!

You can take Romans 10: 9-10 out of context and say that if you confess with your mouth and believe in you heart that you will be saved.
But remember-You must look in the first part of Romans (and many other places). Romans 6 speaks to dying to sin and being baptized. Baptism in Greek actually means immersion just to clear up the sprinkling thing.
But I do not believe that baptism alone can save anyone. It is part of the process of believing and repenting. We can't just take one part of scripture and talor it for our own ease.

I dont think that you must be baptized to be saved. Because all those people that pray to God to be their Savior and die 2 minutes later dont have the chance to be baptized. As long all you repent to God and ask with your heart to be saved then you are.
