China launches 'Jade Rabbit' rover on its first moon-landing mission - NBC News.com

In Chinese legend, Yutu, meaning "Jade Rabbit," is the white pet rabbit of the moon goddess Chang'e. The name was selected by the public using Internet websites. Participants around the world cast nearly 3.5 million votes, with Yutu receiving the most votes over a 10-day period.

No casualties were reported after the successful launch of China's first moon rover, Chang'e-3, from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in the southwestern province of Sichuan, but debris from the launch hurtled into a village in neighboring Hunan province.
A photograph in the newspaper showed a farmer standing by a desk-sized chunk of the rocket that had apparently smashed through his wooden roof.

Congratulations to the Chinese for the launch, but I think they need a better plan in terms of where debris is likely to fall.

China is going to take over as the technological leader in the world.

When half the population of their main competitor believes magical creatures are more likely than demonstrable scientific fact, it will be a cake walk.

When half the population of their main competitor believes magical creatures are more likely than demonstrable scientific fact, it will be a cake walk.

The fact that China is about to eclipse the US in terms of some areas of scientific leadership has more to do with the size of their population and the efficiency of their government more than anything related to religion. It's not like they don't have their own share of "problems" however in areas of water and air pollution and safe food production and distribution. The US won't just roll over and play dead now that some areas of the world have caught up to us, we'll continue to grow and share our abundant food and other wealth with the rest of the world.

It gets really annoying hearing atheists blaming the worlds ills on religion. It really does.

FYI, China has not landed people on the moon and returned them safely back to Earth yet. We did that almost 45 years ago, and pretty much started the whole microprocessor market in the process.

Space has it benefits in terms of science and in terms of strategic military value. I'm quite proud to see private enterprise starting to enter the space age. Once that process builds up some momentum, we'll have no problem keeping up with China in space.

I think NASA was really wise to foster the development of private space launches. It will change the way we use space in short order.

At the military level, probably so. I do believe however that the the long term technology race will likely be between various private enterprises rather than various governments. Once private companies start turning a real profit in space, I believe things will change rather rapidly in terms of the technological advances.
