  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

The fact that the resignation of one Republican can garner enough attention to now have 100 posts, I'm rather encouraged that attention is moving away from Obama and towards the Republican future.

I read that as "the republican failure."

So basically, you're trying to define conservative for us. Nice.

Nope! I'm trying to define conservatism myself, and the only unifying definition I have is along the lines of Edmund Burke. That's not defining anything *for you*; that's appealing to reality, and this appeal can be wrong.

So, when liberals refuse to drop their principles for "unity" they're showing backone, right? When conservatives refuse, it's because we're no longer true conservatives?

It depends on the rigidity with which you hold to the application of your principles. Liberals: ain't no rigidity! Let's be free and make up new principles! Conservatives: let's try and hold to the principles of the past, unless it's clear that they don't work. Hyper-conservatives: let's try and hold to the principles of the past at all costs, because giving up ideology in any form is unacceptable.

People have been defining their political opposition for a long time, nothing new. Suddenly taking offense at it now is a bit disingenuous when one has been doing it (rather than accepting the definition said group chooses for themselves) all along. "Liberals hate America every bit as much as terrorists do." - Some conservative friend

There's a difference between arguing whether X is a conservative or liberal principle or if it's both. It's a whole new thing to make up crazy stuff like defining liberal as not being rigid in one's principles/beliefs. If that were the case, almost ever one on here would be conservative or "hyper conservative."

So you're saying to understanding one's terms, you shouldn't go back to the historical dudes who first articulated these terms to some degree? That's certainly how we keep continuity with words, by going back to their etymology.

The alternative is what again? Caprice depending on your generation and ideological preference?

Well Creech, we're all sorry that she didn't condone slavery and secession enough.

Lol that is not my problem with her. My problem is that she is a warmonger and an extreme partisan among other things.

I think "conservatives" like Bachmann represents the Republican Party's stray from traditional values and ideas. I will not miss her.

Just out of curiosity, what stray was that?

So I suppose the IRS targetting Conservatives as well as Christians and Jews didn't happen, oh that's right it did happen...

So much for it being a conspiracy theory huh...

Holy Non-Sequitors Batman! I know you have your favorite chew toys, but to suggest that Rep. Bachmann didn't engage in CTism or at least rumor mongering is laughable.

- $200mil./day India trip
- 5 chefs on Air Force One and personal dog walker for Beau
- Witch hunt against Houma Abidin - a Muslim so radical she married a Jewish guy.
- Anti-American Congreespersons

And then there's the HPV vaccine nonsense.
Here's a Youtube video of her making her claim. It comes at 2:10.
Michele Bachmann claims HPV vaccine made woman's daughter mentally retarded - YouTube
She claims that a woman came up to her after the debate and said her daughter took the vaccine and suffered from "mental retardation" afterwards.

That's pure idiocy. No one apart from crazed anti-vaxxers would make a claim like that. The long debunked claim is that vaccines - given to infants - causes Autism, not that the HPV vaccine given to tweens causes mental retardation.

Oh really? I actually did some checking and it's funny, while you thought what Bachman was nutty, you need to learn that just cause something sounds nutty, doesn't mean it isn't true.

Health risks from HPV vaccine:

Side effects for the HPV vaccines include pain and redness or swelling at the injection site. In addition, other mild reactions can include dizziness, nausea and headache, the CDC reported. Fainting is also a side effect, but it is important to note that it can occur because of any vaccine or injection. There was also an increase of blood clots of the lungs reported compared to young women around the same age who had received other vaccines, but 90 percent had a known risk factor for blood clots, including taking oral contraceptives, otherwise known as birth control pills.

In total, 23 million doses were administered as of June 2006. Out of 12,424 cases of adverse events by that date, only 6 percent were serious and 32 deaths were reported. However, none of the deaths had a discernible pattern that would suggest that the vaccine was the cause of death.

Side effect fears stop parents from getting HPV vaccine for daughters - CBS News

Apparently your "checking" consisted of a Google search and you didn't pay attention to your own source. First part in bold - 90% of the women who reported increased blod clots had known risk factors for developing blod clots, so one cannot conclude the Gardisil was the cause. Second part in bold - did you miss the word "none". And nothing in that article validates her cockamamie assertion that some woman claimed her tween daughter became "mentally [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]" after getting the HPV vaccine.

Actually it does...

Seriously man. You need to break yourself of this habit.

It can cause an increase in blood clots, in case you were unaware, blood clots in the brain are what causes strokes... Strokes cause brain damage which can cause a loss in a person's ability to function permanently...

So no matter how you try to spin it, what Bachman said was accurate...

Wow, just wow. Her claim was not that the HPV vaccine caused a blood clot that caused a stroke that caused mental retardation (which it doesn't btw). She claimed the vaccine itself caused the mental retardation.

And strokes don't cause diminishment of mental faculties and capacity as much as they cause loss of motor function and the ability to express oneself. Further, your claim that the HPV vaccine causes strokes is contradicted by medical authorities.
HPV Vaccine | The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia said:
Safety networks have continued to monitor reactions to the HPV vaccine since its licensure. Despite concerns raised by the media and some citizen groups, no cause-effect links have been found between HPV vaccine and adverse events, including blood clots, allergic reactions, strokes, seizures, Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), birth defects, miscarriages, or infant/fetal deaths. While fainting episodes following HPV vaccination have been reported, the rates have not been higher than those following receipt of other vaccines for teens.
Bold and color mine.

Additionally a recent, limited study seems to point towards a link between HPV and various heart and blood problems, including strokes,- so getting the vaccine could help prevent strokes if this study pans out.
Report links HPV with heart attacks, strokes | Reuters

So are you suggesting strokes can't cause brain damage?

They sure as heck don't cause "mental retardation".

Did Sen. Dole take the test himself? I ask becuase I'm wondering what is the ultimate source of that plot graph.

I know where you got the chart from, because I did a properties check on the message in which you posted it. My question is how did that chart get generated? Did Sen. Dole take the test himself or did someone else plug in responses in his stead in order to come up with "his" chart?

We're claiming that Bachmann took the claim and ran with it.

In other words, the claim she made was true.

She presented the claim as likely being true with nothing but heresay to back it up. It would be like me claiming cold shots may give people cancer because someone at a football game told me their kid had it happen.
