Truth. But's let not forget to consider sources here. Bob Dole retires on principle -- that's believable. You know, he's an old-school conservative. Bachmann retires on principle -- that's not so believable. She's part of a moving ideological party; quitting this would be against her (not immoral) ambition.

The limit for presidents isn't eight years, it's two elected terms or ten years (two elected terms plus up to two years of an unelected term).

Since Bachmann has already had four terms, she could go the extra one and still be within the presidential limit. One more reason not to take her at her word on this.

But Bachmann underperformed last year, winning re-election by less than 5,000 votes in a district that Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney easily carried. Her opponent last year, Democrat Jim Graves, has already announced that he would challenge her again in 2014, national Democrats were already targeting her, and Bachmann had already begun running re-election ads earlier this month, more than a year and a half before the next election.

Sadly I have a feeling I'm not done hearing about Bachmann. Like our lady of the arctic I'm guessing Bachmann is looking forward to the post-congress grifting. Will she end up at Fox? That's my guess but there's a lot of wingnut welfare for people like her.

She is done politically, but there are several active members of Congress just as far out as her - Cruz, Broun, Gohmert and King all come to mind. As for her further career, I can definitely see her as an analyst on Fox at the least.

Hmm. I doubt the electoral motive. Bachmann may well have lost her seat in '16, but turnout will probably not favor Democrats in '14 like it didn't in '10. A smaller electorate is not in our favor. That's the main reason Republicans are pushing legislation that will hurt voter turnout. They want presidential election years to have weak turnout like off years. It's to their advantage.
