The name of a child becomes "official" when he becomes an "official" member of the Jewish community and the covenant, at the Bris. This is the first time the child's name is pronounced before the community of Israel, as it were. "Let his name be known as .... in Israel." This took on even more meaning as in the Diaspora Jews usually were required, or did because of efforts to assimilate, to take on non-hebrew names.

Modern and post-modern Judaism has created a companion ceremony for the girls, since they are spared the bris. Hence, the "naming" ceremony.

At the Bris or the naming ceremony the name is always Hebrew.

A BIG thanks everyone.

I had run into a situation with a "mixed" couple: one
Christian; one Jewish. The grandparents of their
child wanted a naming ceremony for the new
baby. Their rabbi refused to perform it.

The grandparents were angry about it, but
the parents weren't. I think they're just
going to do it themselves with the rest
of the family in attendance at a home.

Non-Messianic Rabbis, as a rule (and all rules are broken) will not preform a Bris on a child of a "mixed" (i.e. actively Jewish & Christian) couple.

Rejoice - it is acts like that among the Jewish community that drive people like those grandparents to check out the Messianic community!! B"H!!

Only if the child is Jewish (i.e. has Jewish parents by birth or legitimate conversion) does the Bris signify entrance into the Mosaic covenant.

I can not speak to what the various colorful spectra of Messianic Gentiles do - certainly there is no official recognition of such a ceremony for non-Jews recognized in the Jewish community, inside or outside the Messianic community.

As far as I know, there's no ceremony for Messianic Gentiles, but all of us who I personally know are circumcised, and plan to circumcise their children. Most of us see it as keeping in line with Isaiah 56.
