I wish I could bring you & the ppl in Australia who can't even BREATHE properly or function here Zoii. It's heartbreaking.

Ella said they are facing fires in Cali too. They probably won't be nearly as destructive but still. Or I'd wish you there instead of Canada bc you'd go from burning up to freezing.

Wow that's bad

I've never seen anything like the smoke haze today. (Also in Melbourne). Couldn't even see up the street clearly; drivers with their lights on during the middle of the day, sort of thing.

Yes. That person was actually me Cimorene. I was crazy shocked that nobody in the US had discussed forest fires that destructive.

I'm sure it seemed like I was belittling the California fires. I did not mean to be. But the destruction caused by Australia's fires are INCOMPARABLY worse and FAR greater in size.

Thank you for posting the pictures, I don't know how to do all that, it gives a perspective on what it is like. I am in central Victoria in a little town, in November I went to our local community fire safety session and learned how ignorant I was. I now have an emergency app on my phone that everyone should have.
We have been fortunate so far and I pray it stays that way, by Thursday we will be back to dangerous weather conditions.
Never, ever have we seen it so bad and one thing that was learned by the Black Saturday fires 10 years ago was for people to get out early and many have.
The problems are in many peoples case, there was no way out. Thankfully the people at Mallacoota had the beach to go to and even with milder conditions today, the smoke has made it impossible for aircraft to evacuate people or drop off supplies to communities that are cut off.
The scariest thing I heard today was one of the firechiefs saying it was inevitable that the Victorian and NSW fires are going to join up, creating a mega fire.
Then there are the fires in all the other states and Kangaroo Island is 1/3 burnt.

They say that 90% of fires are lit by males. I'm curious about the psychology behind it. I did some literature reviews and found that:

Most natural vegetation fires occur from 12 to 6pm. Deliberate vegetation fires peak between 3 and 6pm., and non-deliberate vegetation fires peak between 1 and 4pm.

The 3 to 6pm peak for deliberate fires is anecdotally attributed to children as they move around after school. Where fires have been directly attributed to children 16 years or younger, the fires peak earlier on weekends.

48 percent of all deliberate vegetation fires occur overnight between 6pm and 6am compared with 30 percent of all nondeliberate vegetation fires.

In many areas night-time fires are often associated with Friday or Saturday nights and the following early morning. The highest proportion of night time fires occurs in urban or semi-urban

The research suggests the general profile of arsonists tends to be that they are 25- to 30-year-old white males from broken homes with low academic performance and poor social skills. They may also have a history of alcohol abuse and involvement with other crimes, but there is a wide range of people who have been involved in arson for a range of complex reasons

younger children are involved disproportionately because of the spike in bushfire ignitions after school, and one of the strongest predictors of ignitions is areas with high rates of single parent families with children under 15. These acts of arson tend to be accidental/experimental in nature.

Today's update:
  • NSW police confirmed the 20th death in the state from the current fire season, after a search found a body on a property in the Eurobodalla shire at 4pm today.
  • In NSW, all fires are at advice level with no immediate danger.
  • In Victoria, 31 fires are burning, with 13 watch and act warnings in place.
  • Authorities in Victoria are looking at Thursday and Friday this week as days with the potential for worse conditions.
  • In South Australia, fire activity is increasing on Kangaroo Island and a total fire ban has been declared for Tuesday.
  • Smoke haze continued to impact residents around fire areas, and in Melbourne and Canberra in particular.

No, there has been milder weather for a couple of days, with a little rain in areas which believe it or not caused more smoke which has covered a lot of Victoria, thus stopping aircraft delivering supplies to those stranded and evacuating others.
Thursday and Friday are going to return to very dangerous conditions with high temps and wind, the combination that is dreaded by all, especially with predictions of Victoria and NSW fires that are predicted to join up.
It doesn't bear thinking....
And of course there are the other states as well. Horrific.
Pray God sends much rain and that people turn to the One who truly saves:prayer:

Another thing that has started many of these fires is dry lightening igniting tinder dry bush which has been exacerbated by so much undergrowth that has been left on the ground, due to poor management and closing off much of the grazing of cattle in the High country National Parks which was banned a number of years ago, thus creating plenty of fuel for any fire that does start.
