• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Has anyone else ever heard of this? Ever been diagnosed with it? Someone on another forum suggested that this could be my problem. I did a little searching online and whatever I could find that wasn't in confusing scientific terms pretty much sounded like me.

This term is not in the current diagnostic manuel. (Atypical Depression would fall under, Depressive Disorder, NOS). I think someone might have written something to suggest that this pattern is consistant enough to be considered for a future diagnostic criteria.

Personally, I think it is best to leave diagnosis to the professionals. Talk with your therapist about your depression about explain how you respond to rejection or thoughts of rejection.

Rather then find a label (diagnosis), I suggest focusing on improving your day to day functioning and talking things out with your therapist.

(If you are not seeing a therapist in real life, please please find one. If you can't afford one, see if a local minister has training in counseling and see them.)

I can't afford a therapist. Unfortunately I don't know of any local ministers that are qualified to counsel. :-(

I've been to shrinks in the past but it's obviously not helped as I've been living with this for over 20 years. I'm currently on a low dose of Prozac. That appears to not be working anymore either. It seems to me that once you're on meds around here, the docs just pretty much want to get your insurance money. They really don't want to listen to anything you say and won't spend more than 5 minutes with you. At least that has been my experience. It's frustrating.

docs in general. I've been to psychologists for therapy but I don't see where that has helped me. It may have helped 'at the time' but there is obviously some long-term or chemical thing going on that causes me to get really, really depressed in cycles. I can't seem to find anyone who will listen. It was my OBGYN who prescribed the Prozac this time around. She said at the time I had the option of treating hormonal symptoms by being on the Pill or try treating the more depressive symptoms by being on antidepressants. I remember the Pill giving me headaches and making me really irritable so I choose the antidepressant route. I guess I may need to see about changing out the meds but honestly I'm scared of doing even more damage to myself. Does that make any sense to anyone?
