  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

well i think there is something to be admired in all religions and all religions have some great people and not so great people

christianity - there are a few good teachings and stories and it has produced some great people like Mother Teresa . i must also mention this one girl who i have conversed with on another forum . she is largely responsible for me having a positive outlook towards christianity ( after talking to a bunch of hard hearted fundies it was not so great ) . well this girl was a fundie too but different from the rest . her deep faith , her in depth knowledge of the bible , her attitude towards life and other people and her determination not to compromise on her fundamentals and morals ( same as "fundies" ) were really impressive . she was truly a positive example of a christian . btw she was 14 when i conversed with her so all the more admirable

islam - their deep sincere devotion towards God , brotherhood in their religion , willingness to fulfill incovenient rituals like fasting and dressing styles because of their dedication is admirable . also muslim countries and cultures have some really yummy food

well gtg now but will cover other religions later

paganism- all the pagans i have met here have been really warm , friendly and tolerant . they have not only come across as knowledgeable about religions and world views but also friendly compassionate people in real life. i admire their faith and dedication . pagans and hindus have quite a few common beliefs imo

judaism - i admire their immense dedication to their faith , inspite of persecution and ridicule  . they just go about following their religion in the best way possible instead of shouting from roof tops . again amazing brotherhood and tolerance in the religion . they are warm and friendly towards people of other religions . i also admire that they are non evangelizing . i also like their rituals and sincerity

buddhism - i have a great amount of respect and admiration towards this religion . dharma , karma and ahimsa   . words would fall short for this faith who i consider to be a sister religion to mine . all the buddhists here have been so knowledgeable and so compassionate . they are truly an example to other people . i also admire their courage and commitment and dedication in light of the tibetan atrocities

bahai - i admire how they try to unite seemingly conflicting faiths , again very friendly and tolerant . i like reading their inputs here

why thank you arunma , though iirc you have stated in other threads that you do find a few stories and teachings to be good so i wont take offense that you can find nothing good to state about my religion ;)

Oops, it looks like you've caught me. OK, I'll confess: I did say that I think the Vedas are a superb collection of literature which portray the divinity with some accuracy. But I consider Hinduism to be a vast distortion of those scriptures, so I don't know if this counts.

Buddhism - Most peaceful, great Dhrama faith just like others.

Sikhism - Very Hard working.

Christian Spiritist - Most logical in a family of Illogical fairy tales.

Islam - Strong faith. 2 million people during Hajj at one place shows strength of this religion and level of faith among it's followers. (although much less than 70 million during MahaKumbh Mela). Indian Suffism which adopted extensively from Vedic philosphy is most peaceful branch of Islam and i love it.

Judaism - They don't sell there religion like Pepsi and Coke.

Like Sanaa states, there's something to be admired in all religions:

Christianity/Catholic - about 10% of my family follow this faith.. I must give them props. They're very dedicated in spreading love and always giving a helping hand to those who are less fortunate. As we speak, my Aunt, Uncle, and my 2 cousins are in MS helping out the victims of Hurricane Katrina. They gave up they're Christmas to help the needy... They've never once said anything ill about the rest of the family being Hindus or even tried to convert us and when they can come to Florida, they help out with the Pooja, partake in prayers (of course we tell them to pray the way they want too, just pray with us). If I wasn't blessed to see, feel, and understand what Christians are about, I'd have no respect for this faith. Thank you Lord for blessing me with understanding.
Islam - again about 10% of my family follow this faith. Plus I have many friends who are Muslims. I love the dedication they have in prayers. Thank you Lord for blessing me with understanding.

Hinduism/ Buddhism - Well, since I'm Hindu (got lots of nice things to say...lol) So I'll like to take the time out to acknowledge Buddhism. When I was lost in faith, the words of Buddha brought me peace to my soul. It helped me understand a lot about this thing called "Self"... I love everything about it, the teachings, meditations, and the way of loving - accepting life for the good and the bad... If I wasn't a Hindu, I'd be a Buddhist. Thank you Lord for blessing me with understanding.

Judaism - I truly respect this religion. The things they had to go thru and still standing strong. Thank you Lord for blessing me with understanding.

Namaste Theowne,

thank you for the post.

i was a bit confused in my initial reply :)

the Pope(s) have determined that the scientific evidence is incontrovertable with regards to evolution of the biological form, and thus they have no issues with understanding Evolution as the process by which God created phyiscal forms.

the prostrations are similiar to various yoga postures which we use in our practice. this has a positive benefit to the physical constitution of a being.

as a fellow Dharma tradition, there is much which i appreciate about the various flavors of what we call Hinduism. in particular, i appreciate the empahsis on logical reasoning and analysis of phenomena and their nature. not to mention Ahisma.

already provided some views on this tradition. to futher elaborate... i appreciate the understanding in Judaism of spiritual maturity and the realization that beings are not all the same and require teachings which are appropriate to their level of understanding.

metta,

Come on Theowne, you know you're not going to get me to say anything nice about Hinduism. But what I've already said is better than nothing, right?

Sorry for the misunderstanding arunma, that request was intended people mature enough to handle such a request :)

I'm going with a history theme, since saying anything about _how nice their beliefs are_ is kind of... less than nice.

Christianity/Catholic

--Kept literacy alive in the Dark Ages

Islam

--More technologically advanced than Europe was prior to the crusades (then Europe pirated their technology)

Hinduism

--Effective system of retribution (Karma)

Judaism

--Like a good stick of gum... long lasting.

Christianity/Catholic - I like the ceremonies and rituals of the Catholic mass. It's all very holy and one can get goosebumps from the way they celebrate Christ! :)

Islam - Hmmm, their art is just fantastic! And it is Muslims who brought the "0" zero into mathematics :)

Every religion has something in it that I admire.

Christianity - The original "teachings" of Jesus Christ. Most non-evangelical Christians are friendly.

Islam - The unadulterated Quran has some worthy teachings in it.

Hinduism - Most Hindus are very tolerant people. A good amount of its philosophical ideas are excellent. Hindu culture has perhaps the most amount of variety and liveliness.

Buddhism - Very peaceful and tolerant religion. Being a subset of Hinduism it has taken all the good aspects of Hinduism.

Judaism - The 10 Commandments are noble ideas, since they are a subset of Dharma.

Hmmm, Actually they were Hindus/India from where 0 and other numerals passed to Arabia and from Arabia to Europe. You can say Muslims/Arabia only performed role of a bridge from Hindu civilization >to> Europe.:)

Even most reputed Encyclopedias have changed title of numerals from Arabic Numerals to Hindu-Arabic Numerals because they were invented by Hindus.
