Atoms are just interactions between forces and particles. Why are they allegedly so difficult to explain? And who said "everything came from nothing"?

Atheists claim that everything came from nothing. How did all of the different kinds of atoms come into existance? By natural selection?

The book The Cosmic Code by Heinz Pagels is a very readable introduction to sub-atomic physics, though it's a trifle out of date. It is ubiquitous in libraries and used bookstores. Heinz Pagels is the late husband of the Liberal Christian theologian Elaine Pagels (who is also an excellent writer).

Also, any of the books in the Mr. Tompkins series (George Gamow) are fun to read, though they don't go into much depth.

If by godless you mean that evolution does not require the existence of a god in order to be true, you would be correct. If by godless you mean that evolution contradicts the existence of gods, you would not be correct.

It's "godless" in the same sense that relativity or gravity are also "godless" theories. That is, they speak neither for or against the issue of God. But, they are not mutually exclusive.

Did you actually read the posts by myself and Troodon? All the different elements (read: atoms) were created by fusion within the cores of stars. Full stop end of story.

Hmm... well God created all matter, this matter was dispersed throughout the expanding universe in the big bang, the matter "cooled" and condensed into larger and heavier particles (I think that's right; I'm not an astrophysics major ), these particles (H atoms by now) were attracted to each other (gravity) and condensed further into hydrogen clouds which continued to attract more and more hydrogen until they formed super-massive stars. Eventually these stars couldn't support themselves any more (larger stars do this before smaller stars if I remember correctly) and it 'blew up'. This dispersed not only the tons of remaining hydrogen but also all of the heavier elements that were created in the star's fusion reactions and as a result of the star going super-nova. The remaining gasses and heavier elements again clumped together to form many more smaller stars which undertook the process again. I think we live in a third generation star system (like with all the other stuff, I could be mistaken).

If you're asking why matter forms atoms then all I can say is that's how matter works; God made it that way (I assume).

Ok before my head explodes in frustration. The stars form when clouds of dust and gas collapse under the influence of gravity. As the clouds get ever more dense their temperature increases, this causes an increase in outward pressure. If the mass of the cloud is great enough (roughly 0.08 or more of that of our sun) then gravity overcomes this outward pressure and the cloud collapses so much that the temperature increases to a level whereby fusion can occur and be maintained until the source of material to maintain the fusion is used up.

No, SCIENTISTS know that stars are formed by gravity. They do not make themselves using gravity, gravity causes them.

The hydrogen doesn't burn in a conventional sense, it is not undergoing combustion in the presence of oxygen which is a chemical reaction. It undergoes a series of nuclear reactions to eventually form helium atoms (and eventually other elements).

The hydrogen does get consumed over the period of several million to several billion years depending on the mass of the star.
