ATI video/graphics card from 2010

Hi

I've bought a (used) HP 6005 PC for about 150 US$, but all the onboard graphic interfaces are broken (and the seller installed an old ATI graphics card with VGA only instead).

Now I'm looking for a good ATI graphics card/video card (with HDMI or Displayport and DVI) from the same year my HP 6005 was released, Summer to Winter 2010.

Does anyone know a good one? Price range: max. 70 US$?

It's more modern than your HP, but it'll work just fine. Plus it doesn't require a high-output power supply.


When you said the graphic interfaces are broken, do you mean the ports where you plug the monitor cable in are physically damaged, or that you just don't get a signal out of them?

Well, I don't get a signal out of them. So I assume they're physical damaged.
I tried both, the VGA port and the Displayport. The Displayport was pasted over with something like wax.

Well, you could just pop the wax off. Worst thing that could happen is that one won't work either.
I'd be concerned about the video chip on the board if it was bad. That could mean it was exposed to too much current, which could damage other things.

The computer works fine. And I did pop off the wax, just to realize that the display-port is broken (as well as the vga-port).
Anyway, I bought a cheap nvidia graphics card. Since my dad doesn't play graphic intensive games, or actually not at all, it's fine.

Blue card slot = pci-e - you can use the latest graphics cards which low end ones are cheap and new cards uses less electricity / heats less.

Brown card slot = agp = really old - avoid buying computers with these, really power hungry and goes hotter, not to mention, parts are more expensive/hard to find.

I don't know much about ATIs, only with Nvidias.

Low end (cheap) Nvidia use the numbers 1 up to 5 (higher numbers, more expensive), ie - Geforce 810, 820, 830, 840, 850, 730, 740, 750, etc... Number 6 is mid-end (example, Geforce 860, 760, etc). 8 and upwards (Geforce 880, 890, 780 ) are considered "performance cards" and are most expensive of the bunch. In addition, those with "GT" or "GS" after the numbers goes like this: GT > GS > nothing > LE - performance-wise.

Another thing to consider is the generation of the card. The first number of the model denotes the generation. Higher number = newer, higher performance, higher efficiency (uses less power and runs cooler) and they are sometimes, cheaper than the previous generation when they were first released!

I would think the best cards for you is the Nvidia Geforce 720 to 740 (low-end, two generations older), assuming you had the blue (PCI-E) card slot. These cards should be cheap, quite energy efficient, and still run graphics intensive games like World of Warcraft quite well even if your dad don't play games but Nvidia don't make turtle-slow cards these days anymore.

And it doesn't matter if I build in a nvidia card into an AMD mainboard?
I mean, do ATI graphic cards perform better in an AMD mainboard?

I've always thought: nvidia --> intel; AMD --> ATI.

Your onboard GPU might not be broken...just disabled in BIOS.

You can combine any card from AMD(ATI), Matrox or nVidia with just about any mainboard (motherboard) regardless of the chipset.

Finally I've found a list with officially supported graphics cards for the HP Compaq 6005 Pro MT from around the release year.
One of them is the Sapphire AMD ATI Radeon HD 6450 (1GB RAM). I think I'll buy one (for the other HP Compaq 6500 I have).
