  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I joined this forum when I was a Christian. The reasons I stayed are complicted. In short, I missed the religious atmosphere, and I enjoy getting into conversations about the existence of God on occasion.

The censorship can be annoying, but that is to be expected.

Atheist forums are boring. Everyone agrees with the very small point that makes us atheists. Then there are the atheist forums filled with folks who think not believing in a god somehow makes them mentally superior to everyone else. Those folks get on my nerves.

I enjoy that fact I can come here and get differing views, I enjoy the politics forums.

I come almost exclusively for this part.. the World Religion bit. I was looking for a forum where such things are discussed and found a couple of discussions going on here that grabbed my attention.

It just so happens that the main site is Christian which I did not know until I looked, and I have gotten into minor trouble on the few occasions I stray out of this (mostly) nice, friendly section!

I'd be just as likely to join an atheist-owned forum, but ONLY if there was a World Religion section where people of all faiths were welcome to post.

I am just wondering why y'all joined the Christian forums. Not upset, I enjoy chatting with you guys. Just curious, what made you seek out to join a Christian forum?

I was invited here. An atheist poster mentioned an interesting thread at CF, and posted a link so I could join in.

Once here, I had decided that I could help dispel some myths and stigmas regarding atheists, and so I stuck around.

I remained here because of interesting discussions, though it was mainly the non-Christian posters that I found the most interesting. Still, the Christian posters could sometimes engage in stimulating conversation, and I did learn a bit about Christians in this way. All in all, my participation here has been part of the Examined Life.

God Bless

Religion interests me. The topic of religion comes up a lot among my friends and family, but usually between other people. I typically bite my tongue unless I'm asked a question as I think it would be a bit rude to jump into the conversation if all I'm going to be doing is disagreeing with everyone.

But I do like to occasionally talk about religion, so finding places online where debate and discussions of people with varying opinions is allowed scratches that itch.

Not an Atheist per se, but I think that most religious people would group me with them.

It's a combination of factors;

Non-Theist forums are insanely boring
I like being challenged and forced to think in new ways

But maybe the biggest reason I ended up specifically here is that I actually started out as a Christian and thought this forum would be a good jumping off point for growing my faith. If anything, it helped to undermine it along side the natural factors that come with disbelief.

Now I stay mostly out of habit and to hear the opinions of a handful of people I have a lot of respect for.

As a former Christian myself...

If you were a Christian, then shouldn't you be familiar with 1 John 2:19 and shouldn't you have a better understanding on the Christian doctrine of regeneration than to believe one can be a Christian and then not a Christian?

tI can understand this mindset. When one is hyper sensitive about their beliefs, atheists and general detractors can easily be seen a monsters.

Not monsters, just jerks.

Honestly, I was pretty ignorant about my own faith as a Christian and really did my own thing. I wasn't a "Christian" then.. I don't care.. I still joined the forum when I at least thought I was one, lol.

I viewed them as monsters, and I knew many other Christian friends who did too. Atheists used to make me sick to my stomach. I used to spend a lot of time thinking about how they'll eventually burn in hell and how happy that made me.

Jokes on me, I became one of them.. lol.

Everyone is a jerk a little bit. I try to be as respectful as I can, but sometimes I can't help myself and I end up being a little rude. I can't speak for all atheists, but many of these beliefs seem very silly and it's hard not to mock them every once in a while. While it may seem harmless to us, I do understand how a religious person will take great offense about it.

But like I said many Christians (including me when I was one) are not so nice themselves. But we're only human and little animosity is understandable.

If that makes you happy, then you might want to go talk to a doctor about that.

And you think that's appropriate?

To mock, ridicule, blaspheme, insult, and just generally disrupt.

Do explain, how is it disruptive to post in a section where we are welcomed, and not in other sections where we are not permitted to post at all?

Also, explain how it is blasphemy for someone of a differing world view to express those views? It would be blasphemy for YOU to speak against God, but not for me who doesn't believe in magic. Indeed, it is ironic that the constitution of your Country protects this right, as is also the case in mine.

To mock? Calling stupid things stupid is not mockery, it is description. And nobody cares if your delicate sense of self-entitlement is offended every time someone fails to use the hushed and reverent tones of subjugation when pointing out your very real failings.

With many exceptions on this very forum, who I respect, I nonetheless have a far greater understanding and appreciation for The Bible even as a secular humanist, than a great many so-called Christians. You among them.

You say these things while yourself posting on a thread addressed to atheists. Tell me, is it a requirement of your Church's doctrine to be a hypocrite, or did Jesus set this as an example to be followed in your opinion?

You sir, are weak. Your position so lacking in inherent strength that you must find another kind entirely to work for you. You are so threatened by a differing opinion that you would sooner see differing opinions silenced and lose the right of free thinking and freedom of expression, than see it investigated and considered in a desire for ACTUAL, OBJECTIVE truth, whatever that may be.

Is the God you claim to believe-in so desperately in need of your unthinking, animistic snarling? Or is it in fact merely your own personal and entirely worldly, human lust for social standing and power over others within your tribe that you protect?

You remind me of the playground bully who, having pushed over another child, feigns crying and runs to tell tales to teacher first, in the hope of not being found-out. An object of disdain.

Choose. You cannot be both right and self-righteous. As I believe Jesus himself is said to have demonstrated at no minor personal cost for which you owe him by your own creed. There's a good book about that. You should try reading it some time and when you're done, read it again. And again. Until you actually learn something.

If you claim to have read it, then it must be for your own ends that you willfully ignore the following, making you not only a crappy person but an abject failure as a Christian.

James 1:22

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

Proverbs 18:15-24

An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.
A man's gift makes room for him and brings him before the great.
The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.

Hebrews 11:1

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Ephesians 4:18

They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.

Matthew 7:21-23

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

Titus 1:16

They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.

Romans 2:1-5

Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge,
practice the very same things.
We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things.
Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God?
Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?
But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God's righteous judgment will be revealed.

1 John 2:4

Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him,

Proverbs 26:23-26

Like the glaze covering an earthen vessel are fervent lips with an evil heart.
Whoever hates disguises himself with his lips and harbors deceit in his heart; when he speaks graciously, believe him not, for there are seven abominations in his heart;
though his hatred be covered with deception, his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.

James 1:26

If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless.

Matthew 7:5

You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

Matthew 6:1

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven

1 John 4:20

If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.

1 John 3:15

Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

Ephesians 4:29

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

Leviticus 19:17

You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him

Of course, you won't have actually read the verse I posted... that would be too much like someone who actually cares what The Bible has to offer.

Now, be a good fellow and crawl back under your bridge where trolls belong. mmmk?

Oh come on, you never felt a little happy about the thought of (not necessarily atheists) but enemies you hated burning in hell?

I think expecting an atheist to be totally respectful towards religion all the time is unreasonable..
