  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

According to this article, at least.

Atheist Acceptability on the Rise in America | Psychology Today

This is the part that surprised me:

A recent Gallup poll shows that 54 percent of Americans would not consider a candidate’s atheism to be a disqualification for holding the nation's highest office.

Granted, as the article points out, atheists are still at the bottom of that particular poll, which didn't surprise me. But the recorded percentage increase of acceptability is encouraging, even if there remains a long way to go.

Not really that much to be cheering over, IMO :sigh:

I think the increase over the past few years is encouraging. Not where we'd want it to be, of course, but it's at least heading in the right direction.

I admit, I was as well. I hear a lot more mainstream anti-homosexual rhetoric.

That's probably just the closeted Christians buffing the stats. ;)

(hey, they may be secretly gay but at least they're not an atheist EWWWWWWWWW)

Well, with homosexuals, there's old(30-40 years for most) disproven stereotypes to attack EG:
They:
Recruit children.
Rape Children.
Are promiscuous.
Are Coprophiliacs.
Are sadomasochists.
Have shorter life spans.
Raise homosexual kids.
Are more likely to molest their children.
Want special rights.
Want to destroy the "traditional family"
Were the driving force behind the Nazi regime.
Want to force their values on everyone else.(Oh, projection.)
Can't have long term relationships.
Are mentally ill. But political correctness force the professionals to lie.
Have to wear diapers when they get old.(Gays)
Were molested when they were younger.
Had a distant dad or mother/broken family when younger.
Hate men.(Lesbians)

Lets see...and for atheists....:
[Every dictator for the last 100 years] have been atheists.
They have no moral values.
They just hate God.

...
Err...
I think that's it?

I'd hypothesise that most of the religious people who voted that they wouldn't have no idea what an atheist is like. Not even crappy stereotype ideas.

I'd take a guess that not even having incorrect ideas of what atheists are, to hang on to, makes people distrust them even more.

Well, we do crumble in the presence of sunlight, so it stands to reason that they haven't seen us much.

(why yes, I am feeling very! sarcastic today -_-)

Yeah, and this would be why I was surprised that homosexuals are more favorable. There seems to be so much more vehemence.

Not that I'm upset about homosexuals being more favorable. It's actually pretty nifty. Maybe there will be a homosexual president in my lifetime.

Agreed.

Atheists in the public eye would not have the advantage of hiding behind their faith or using it to deflect attention away from their moral turpitude.

Yes, they have to take responsibility for their own actions a bit more.

Politicians need a way to hide their sleaze from John Q. Public. Without the righteousness of Christ to cover themselves, how would an atheist mayor or police chief accomplish this? (Yes, all politicians are sleazy.)

So in other words...Christian politicians can hide behind Jesus to excuse their corruption?

Does anyone actually believe they're genuine when they do this?

I would wager the corrupt politician is not a christian at all. Could it be that the corrupt politician lied about being a christian to appeal to the religious voters?!
