This is the part that surprised me:
Granted, as the article points out, atheists are still at the bottom of that particular poll, which didn't surprise me. But the recorded percentage increase of acceptability is encouraging, even if there remains a long way to go.

A recent Gallup poll shows that 54 percent of Americans would not consider a candidates atheism to be a disqualification for holding the nation's highest office.
Granted, as the article points out, atheists are still at the bottom of that particular poll, which didn't surprise me. But the recorded percentage increase of acceptability is encouraging, even if there remains a long way to go.
