Asking for Forgiveness

I heard a very convincing speaker (Bob George on KARI) say that "no where in the NT does God ask us to ask Him for forgiveness..so doing so is a sin and foolish" He says we are asking for something that has already been given to us..

But didn't Jesus give us the Lord's prayer, in which He said we should pray for God to "forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.."?

Does anyone support me in thinking that yes, we ARE supposed to ask for God''s forgiveness daily?

Or am I wrong?

Confused a bit:scratch:

Very few ministers will ever make the error that was made by the one you encountered. The Bible in fact tells us to even confess our sins to one another and traditional Christian teaching is that God will not forgive us until we ask for it.From a practical point of view, this requirement makes a whole lot of sense.Unless someone asks for forgiveness it is highly likely that he will keep engaging in his sin either out of ignorance of biblical teachings or just out of a sinful nature.Telling God in prayer what wrongs we engaged in and then asking for forgiveness, helps to decrease the chance the behavior will be repeated. If we were not required to repent, sin would be just too easy to engage in thus insuring that it would greatly increase.

There is another side to the forgiveness doctrine which the words "as we forgive those who trespass against us", shows. Not only does God require us to admit our guilt, but very contrary to the totally satanic teaching that Christians can engage in any sin they wish because God is a big sugar daddy who doesn't care anything about sin in His children;what Jesus taught is that we will not be forgiven by God unless we first forgive others. In this non-Christian society, that is a totally revolutionary teaching.Just think how different the world would be if it was practiced. And it would save an incredible amount of money too. You'd think conservatives would practice it for that reason alone.Just think how much our taxes could be reduced if instad of running all over the world trying to kill our enemies,we just stayed home and forgave them and prayed for God's forgiveness and protection. Unfortunately we're not Christian enough to do that.Yet.

If you believe the Lord called you to fast and you mess up, simply repent and confess and you are forgiven. If God can forgive a murderer and a hater of God, why would He not forgive messing up while fasting?

You are absolutely right in your thoughts Paeonia. There are a good number of speakers/preachers like Bob George nowadays who shall be judged by God on the Day of Judgement. All those who don't care to read/check thru their Bibles are bound to be decieved by such false preachers.

Matthew 6:12 : And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
Matthew 9:6 : But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins,
Luke 7:49 - And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?
1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
