I think it's different.
I do like that grocery store; I don't like paying high prices just to eat.
Kat, are u into all-natural foods and possessions? Do you like, only eat organic foods and such? And do u own anything made out of hemp?
What do you make of the oil crisis? Isn't it time that we *really* put more money into finding, researching, and developing alternative energy sources? And to let the corporations pay for the damage they caused, rather than letting the tax payers do that for them?
So the thread as a whole came to the conclusion "new age" was difficult to define. How about "Hippie"? Why and how do you define yourself as a "hippie"?
I try to live as naturally as possible. Of course, that isn't always feasible due to our dependence upon technology. I use towels and rags instead of paper towels most of the time to clean, I grow my own vegetables, buy organic and fair trade whenever I can, I use eco-friendly cleaning products made from common things like vinegar and baking soda. And I own quite a few balls of hemp cord, because I macrame my own jewelry.
I'm largely a pacifist, anti-war, anti-racism/sexism/homophobia/classism...basically any of the "isms". Pro-Green Movement minus the consumerism aimed toward the movement (i.e., cleaning products specifically marketed as "green" or "eco-friendly" while costing twice as much as their carcinogenic counterparts). Pro-Fair Trade. I like the concept of intentional community (aka, communes or communal living) modeled after Marxist ideology, although I realize Communism could never be successfully implemented on a federal (or even state) level due to the potential for abuse. I believe in living as simply as possible, trying to avoid the trappings of consumerism, and repurposing goods. I also believe there is nothing wrong with being proud of your country of origin or a country you have migrated to, but on the same token we're all citizens of the same earth.
I'm like... just because I have curly hair, I'm skinny, wear the peace signs and obscure religious jewelry, doesn't mean I do drugs, legal or otherwise. >.<
Wot, he didn't go postal on him? Where's the fun in that? (LOL)
Would you say that this energy is the same type of physical energy as the measurable kind? As in, kinetic energy, potential energy, chemical energy, etc? Or is it a supernatural placeholder word?Hey, MarkThe energy that all living entities produce can be felt by anyone, but most people don't readily identify it as such. A book I once read described it best - it's the feeling you get when you're scared/anxious/excited and you get what most people refer to as "butterflies in your stomach". That's energy welling up inside your body. If I, say, touch a tomato plant in my garden I may be able to feel slight (or strong, depending on a number of factors) vibrations coming from the plant against my palm. This isn't a supernatural experience, as the energy is already there within the living subject; however, the vibrations are usually so subtle that you really have to be "looking" for them in order to feel them. Sometimes it is a pulsing sensation or a tickle or, if it's a weak energy, like cobwebs against my hand.
Earlier in this thread you seemed to have differentiated New Age and New Thought. What you list here as New Age seems to match my definition of New Thought except without the astrology and crystals and such. How do you view the difference between the two?My mother was a New Ager when I was a teen. Considering what I learned through her and her New Age friends, I'd suggest that it is simply the idea that:
1) we have "psychic" potentials
2) we can actualize those potentials
From what I can tell, this fascination with psychic powers is common to virtually all New Agers. Of course, one can mention Astrology, crystals, etc, but I think that interest in these things comes down to the belief of mental influences of a psychic sort, whether by planets or by people.
eudaimonia,
Mark
The mystics of various spiritual paths often talk about an awareness of energy behind the physical. They call it different names, depending upon the spiritual path the mystic follows. They say it's not measurable directly, though the experience of it they say does seem to cause changes in the seeker.Would you say that this energy is the same type of physical energy as the measurable kind? Hmm. Tree-huggin? Just another term for sexual harassment of our tree sisters and brothers if you ask me...
-What would you say your diet is like? Typical American meat-heavy diet, or vegetarian, vegan, etc?

I see new age people mentioning vibrations a lot, and how to raise them. Would you say these vibrations are measurable? What is it that is doing the vibration?
