Earlier in this thread you seemed to have differentiated New Age and New Thought. What you list here as New Age seems to match my definition of New Thought except without the astrology and crystals and such. How do you view the difference between the two?

New Thought is New Age, but it is more like a subset of New Age that focuses on positive thinking and material goals, whereas other New Agers aren't necessarily so materialistic. New Thought shouldn't be taken to be the "heart" of the New Age movement, even if it does tap in to some of what interests New Agers in general.

I am a vegetarian.

I don't see it as supernatural, because science can explain it. Our bodies run on energy and that energy can be stored up, manipulated, released.

I feel that the core of my energy is in my solar plexus area. From there I can redirect it. My limited understanding of the scientific aspect of it is that it can be measured, but I'm not well-versed enough in what methods scientists have used to measure this energy.
Do you have any sources or links depicting how science can explain this type of energy?

That sounds like the type of energy that certain schools of martial arts teach, but I've never heard of it being a measurable thing.

In my experience, I haven't seen New Thought focusing on material goods. It sounds like, if anything, the focus on material goods would be a subset of both New Age and New Thought. There are authors and such for both that seem to advocate material goods and are fairly wealthy themselves.

New Thought has some of its roots in American Transcendentalism, and so has very non-materialistic aspects to it, at least in some of its subsets.

I think that's because New Thought is more experiential in nature. It seems to go beyond "belief" in God and moves more towards the "experience" of God with in life itself. Personally, I think that's a good thing.

As long as it doesn't amount to handing the Universe your shopping list...
(Yes, there's actually a book titled "The Cosmic Ordering Service", written by a German new ager who grew filthy rich by selling people the idea that the only thing keeping them from being successful was their own mind. Which needn't be wholly false, but certainly isn't the whole truth in most cases, either.)

You could be right, of course. I'm just giving my sense of the situation based on my own experiences. Perhaps the "Law of Attraction" and such simply grafted themselves onto New Thought well after it had started.

I'm also very curious about this. The closest I've ever seen of this being measurable is rather impossible physical feats, but that's still a demonstration so not an actual measurement. As far as "vibrations" go, I have to wonder if it's not people tuning in to what's happening on a quantum level ...

Valid points! And this is where a book, Divinely handed down to see the Divine "shopping list" comes into play. Even so, most tend to miss seeing and focusing on those goals, intentional or otherwise.

I have read it in books, but I'll try and find a couple of links that help explain the process of energy in the human body and how it can be manipulated.

To the OP. What do you do to help save our planet?

We are a one car family. I grow my own vegetables. I try and purchase fair-trade products whenever I can. I don't eat animal flesh. I use all natural, homemade cleaning products. We recycle/freecycle/purchase second-hand whenever possible.

Did you finish knitting the socks? If so, are you working on another project now?

I did :) I don't have a picture of the finished pair, but below is a picture of the stitch pattern I took after I finished the cuff and a about half of the leg. Right now I'm not knitting anything, because I'm participating in the Tour de Fleece and spinning a lot of my own yarn.

How long have you been spinning? Are you spinning with a wheel or a hand spindle? What is your favorite wool to spin?

I've been spinning almost two years now. I use both a spinning wheel and drop spindles. I started with top whorl spindles, to see if I would enjoy spinning. I purchased a spinning wheel about eight months later. My favorite wool to spin would probably be superwash Merino. It's soft, drafts easily, takes dyes exceptionally well and because it's washable, it's versatile. I don't even have to worry about it felting on me during the dyeing process.

Merino wool rocks! I still don't see why they're called boating socks though. Didn't realize you're in Atlanta, so I guess you won't be taking up Telemark skiing, although it's a shame seeing as you can make yourself all the merino wool apparel you need ^_^ That far South, I guess it's possible to be a hippy w/o Telemark skiing. I think it still needs a special exception from the board though :p

Do you have any advice on how someone who lives in a county with a HORRIBLE recycling program can start recycling/becoming more eco-friendly? I already do the small things, like turn lights off, keep the A/C at a decent temp, etc. and drive a car that gets very good gas mileage.
