So here's my question. Am I the only one having trouble understanding the verse about asking and receiving?

It seems so simple - ask, and it will be given to you.  Yet how many of you have been asking for something in prayer and never received it? So what was Jesus talking about here? How is one to understand and apply this verse?

Dear Saint,

You are going to hear a number of explanations about this simple saying of Jesus. Some are going to try and qualify it with extra requirements and religious sounding arguments. Some will dismiss it as referring only to spiritual things. But the answer is simple. He meant exactly what He said! If you pray for something, and believe that you receive, then you will have whatever you ask for.

Mark 11:24 WNT
(24) That is why I tell you, as to whatever you pray and make request for, if you believe that you have received it it shall be yours.

The only qualification is: do you believe?

Some may try and justify themselves, thinking that because they do not receive, it is a slight to the estimation of their faith. Yet no one is accusing anyone of being unspiritual or somehow lacking in faithfulness. They may even attempt to reconstruct the very nature of God into the image of their own unbelief, saying that God does not really want the best for you, and even going so far as to say that God wills for you to be without: without health, without safety, without needs being met. They would rather impugn God as an uncaring, miserly Father than to admit that maybe they need to grow, learn, and believe.
None of this is true. It is always the will of God that you have the things you ask and believe for. I will say it again. It is always the will of God that you prosper, be in health, and be overrun with blessings in every area of you life! I would rather admit my own lack of faith than to portray God as anything less than the Lord that healeth me, the God who is more than enough, my deliverer, savior, and King.

If we do not receive, the answer is simple. We do not believe. There are numerous reasons why people do not believe. Perhaps the thing we are asking for is simply beyond our personal ability to believe. Perhaps the thing we are asking for is outside the parameters of what our spirit can believe for. Your righteous spirit of God cannot believe for evil. You cannot ask for God to murder someone. "Love believes all things," (1 Corin 13) and murder is outside the realm of love, and so therefore cannot be believed for by your righteous spirit. In these and other examples, the will of God is always the same. He always says yes to whatever you can believe for. He said yes to everything on the day that He sent Jesus to the cross for us. He deemed on that day to settle forever the needs of all mankind on every level.

2 Corinthians 1:20 KJV
(20) For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

When He made Jesus Lord, He made all things His, and there is nothing that He does not have or that He cannot give to us.  To say that God says no is to deny the Lordship of Jesus. When we say Jesus is Lord, we are saying that God said yes to everything.  He has given us everything. He has nothing left to hold back.

2 Peter 1:3 WNT
(3) seeing that His divine power has given us all things that are needful for life and godliness, through our knowledge of Him who has appealed to us by His own glorious perfections.

Oh saints of God, the devil is waiting to steal this simple truth from you. Do not believe his lies. Accept the plain and simple truth of the goodness, the power, and the love of God. Accept it as a little child. In Jesus Name! Amen!

When Jesus said Ask and it shall be given unto you, He was refering to holiness. We live in this world for a brief period of time less than 120 years, But we live eternity in the spiritual realm. Comparing 120 to infinity simply means the life span we spend here is zero as compared to the spiritual life. This is why Jesus stressed on spirituality and not earthly things. As for earthly things live them to God to take care of them. Jesus said "seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and everything else shall be added unto you." i.e we only ask for holiness and let nature takes its own course.

How do we know what earthly things we are supposed to ask for? The earthly thing you ask for may tomorrow be an obstacle. Life on earth is simply ups and downs within which there is a trend. Jesus said it rains the same to both the righteous and the unrighteous.

I do not understand why some Christians like shamelessly singing "God's love is infinity. If your ask for your earthly father to buy you shoes and he does it, how much more can God give you (earthly things) " Yet they pray 100 times for God to give them money and do receive it. They are better of asking Bill Gates to give them money.

Depends.

Are you asking for something that you shouldn't have, like a boyfriend before you are ready, or maybe a relationship with a guy who isn't God's best will for your life? He' snot going to help you hurt yourself or ruin your life.

Are you asking for something impossible, like that the sun won't rise tomorrow? He's not going to help you avoid your problems.

Are you asking for something downright wrong? I know several women who were disappointed with God because they prayed that their ex-husbands would die, but they continued to live. You know God would never honor a prayer like that. He' snot going to help you be a murderer.

Are you asking for something that is counter-productive, like you'll get an "A" on a test that you never studied for? He' s not going to help you cheat like that.

Are you asking for something for the wrong reason? Like you want proof He exists so you demand a million dollars? Or you want him to give you a million so you can have houses and cars and lobsters and attend Oscar night in style? He's not going to help you be selfish.

Are you asking for something that would hurt someone else? Like you want to have your friend's boyfriend, so you pray they'll break up. He's not going to help you be disloyal.

You've got to examine what you've asked for, and what your motive is.

didaskalos basically said what i wanted to say.

Amy,

If you look up scriptures in the NT on asking from the Lord, you will find that it is very simple -- whosoever asks, whatsoever you ask, believe you receive.

1. We cant ask for things that are outside of the will of God eg for someone else's husband to be yours. -- simply cause your heart will condemn you and you wont have the faith to believe for it. even if one is unsure if it is right or wrong to ask such a thing, such uncertain faith wont work.

2. Other than that God always gives the moment you ask in prayer believing you receive. but that happens in the spiritual realm first. the manifestation into the physical will then be instantaneous (as with some healings) or over a period of time.

3. well what are we to do when we believe we receive during prayer? until the manifestation comes, we shld be giving thanks and praising God till the thing we ask for manifests in the physical world.

eg supp your bro comes to you now and tells you, "Hey you know the car you always wanted...well i bought it for you, you can pick it up next week!" it's as good as yours...so in the meantime you'll be excited, expecting it, thanking, making plans for a weekend drive etc -- simply cos you believe your brother's words.

you thank him not to make him get you a car but becos you know you already have it. That's what WOF is all about. we dont confess the word to make things happen like a magic formulae but becos the reality in our heart just causes us to overflow with thanks that its already done in the spiritual world. this builds a bridge of faith to connect the spiritual into the physical and bring about the physical manifestation.

Eph replies....

I learned long ago to thank God for the things he DIDN'T give me that I thought I needed and prayed about...It took some time for me to realise I was better off without those things..!

God ...( thank God )...knew better ahead of time...and made sure my path before " I " knew...!

Selah.....( pause for a moment and think of that )
