  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

When our 100 bankrupt cities fall in the US and many across the world, how will this system that we live in survive, example high tech things that depend upon the money flow (Internet, cell phones, securities (from airplanes to baseball fields and from internet to banks) and jobs. Tell the world, Mr. Wizard how people will remain civil and bellies full when it all comes down so soon? It may be propped up for awhile, but its props have an increasing instability factor. These factors are in the back of everyone's mind. When these mature and realization sets in, which is inevitalbe, fear will take over and the shakey economic pie will become "everyone for themselves". However, Christians will still be around to help their neighbors and the world (and also tell about their savior).

Everyone should be planning for the second huge economic Tsunami wave to hit. There will be a problem with food sources, jobs and a person's morale & future.

Personally, the kind of paradigm shift that accompianied QM and GR isn't going to happen in my lifetime, i think. That said, I'm hopeful that we'll encounter alien life, even if it's not intelligent - after all, we've invented the science of finding exoplanets within my own mere 22 years, and discovered an Earth-like planet just 20 ly away.

So for me it's aliens :p

Don't you think true artifical intelligence would have a much greater impact on how we see the universe?

I certainly look forward for the discovery of alien lifeform, that would be most awesome, but man creating another form of intelligence would be like creating life out ex nihilo.

I wish I could change my alias to Mr. Wizard :)

You need faith, child. Faith in the human spirit. Tragedy begets charity; the more obvious and immediate the tragedy, the better the relief effort. If the US were to somehow lose its ability to feed its populace, the rest of the world would pitch in.

Humans aren't going anywhere soon.

However, Christians will still be around to help their neighbors and the world (and also tell about their savior).
By all means, take this opportunity to tell us.

People have been predicting the imminant downfall of civilisation since the dawn of civilisation itself. Strangely, no such downfall has arrived. I'm not going to hold my breath.

It would undoubtedly be a monumental achievement, outshining everything else we've done. Humanity would become a parent. But why would it change how we see the universe?

Discovering alien life would revolutionise human society: if we could communicate, they could give us technologies and knowledge that are millennia beyond us (the Prime Directive notwithstanding :p). We would also have the answers to all sorts of questions, like the incidence of intelligent life, what alien life looks like, alien biochemistry, etc.
AI, while groundbreaking, wouldn't teach us anything new, I don't think.

I think that it would teach us that consciousness can arise not only from life but also from other complex systems it would be a more philosophical revolution.
I also think it would requestion our place in this system, if machines can do the same things than us then why sould we work and ultimately why should we even exist. Kind of apocalyptic ;)

It may sound a bit sketchy but, thinking about something, making it clear in you mind is one thing but translating it in another language is another.

Maybe they would have answers as to the physics behind the collapse of world trade centre building 7?

You don't seem to have any. :o

Generally? Sooooo......

When theres a wind then the atmospheres NOT rotating with the Earth?

Is that correct?
It is rotating with the earth but has due to convection and coriolis effect varying directions. Imagine you are the atmosphere and are riding in a train. The train is the Earth. You could be dancing ballet and doing pirouettes and moving in all directions including going backwards. This does not change the fact that you are still moving at the same speed as the train. CAPICHE?

I don't pander to conspiracy theorists who just want attention from the adults. But seeing as it's Christmas, I'll just point out that steel loses half its strength when over 600°C. Now run along, Daddy has to drink his eggnog.

That seems a bit circular, though: we invented AI! How do we know? Because it's concious! How do we know? Because it's AI!

Even if we do invent genuine AI, how would we know that we've succeeded?

REALITY CHECK:

1) WICCA

Wicca (pronounced /ˈwɪkə/) is a Neopagan religion and a form of modern witchcraft. Often referred to as Witchcraft or the Craft,[1] its adherents are commonly referred to as Wiccans, or as Witches or Crafters. Developing in England in the first half of the twentieth century,[2] Wicca was popularised in the 1950s and early 1960s by a Wiccan High Priest named Gerald Gardner, who at the time called it the "witch cult" and "witchcraft", and its adherents "the Wica".[3] From the 1960s onward the name of the religion was normalised to "Wicca".[4]

I'd be surprised if anyone here didn't already know that. It's a 50-60 year old revivalist religion, aiming to bring back the old, Pagan, pre-Christian worship of the gods. Super. What's your point?

Freemasons exist, NASA exists. Super. What's your point?

Ah, if only I could be part of such prestiege. In any case, what's your point?

4) EVERY IDIOT IN THE WORLD KNOWS BY NOW 9-11 WAS LITERALLY AN INSIDE JOB.
Key phrase: every idiot. I don't doubt that the idiots of the world think 9/11 was an inside job. Fortunately, educated people know differently.

5) ENJOY YOUR EGGNOG.
Merry Christmas to you too, coJ
