  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why is it bad to swallow toothpaste? How is flouride dangerous?

Fluoride will form CaF2 (calcium fluoride) which is insoluble. Causes hypocalcemia, which is bad cause your body needs calcium in a soluble form. I'm not a fan of fluoride in toothpaste anyways. I dont use fluoridated. I am allergic to it.

Does freezing a mentos in an icecube then putting it in someone's coca cola then waiting for it to melt work? :ebil::ebil::ebil:

The cooler temperature might slow down the catalysis, but apart from that it should.

Are the brain and the mind the same thing?

If not, what’s the difference?

What is intelligence?

How does intelligence work?

What is the mechanism of intelligence?

Does anyone have the intelligence to answer these questions?

If not, that’s okay. :)

Are the brain and the mind the same thing?
Depends on what school of thought you subscribe to.

If not, what’s the difference?
One undeniably exists, the other appears to be an emergent phenomenon.

What is intelligence?
Sentience to the point of sapience.

How does intelligence work?
A centralised nervous system collating sensory data, coordinating the body, planning, and recognising patterns.

What is the mechanism of intelligence?
Synaptic pathways.

Do you have the intelligence to answer these questions?
Yes, and I don't need to embolden the key words either.

So you are familiar with the brain but not the mind?
A centralised nervous system collating sensory data, coordinating the body, planning, and recognising patterns.
Any idea how the centralized nervous system is able to achieve these feats?

I'm familiar with both. The brain is a physical thing you can hold, the mind is not.

3.5 billion years of evolution making our brains more and more complex and better at said feats. The brain becomes better at recognising patters, better at creation abstractions, better at predicting the future. All these lead to conciousness, to sentience, to sapience, to the mind.

Don't get me wrong, the nature of the mind is one of the biggest mysteries in science. What it is, how it works, etc, are all big questions. But we know a lot about the mind nonetheless.

Solipsism, because it has the best name ever .

Solipsism: the philosophical idea that one's own mind is all that exists...knowledge of anything outside the mind is unjustified. The external world and other minds cannot be known and might not exist.
I prefer this school of thought: "For who has known the mind of the Lord...?" But we have the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16).
I'm familiar with both. The brain is a physical thing you can hold, the mind is not.
So, is the mind metaphysical?

I guess “sapiens” are the luckiest ever.

Why are “sapiens” so lucky to compare to the others? Why can’t birds find it more convenient to build a roof over their nests? After so many billions of years of rain-fall and sun-heat you would think they would at least learn to build roofs. Aren't they suppose to adapt?

Sounds like you could be describing a mini universe in our heads, electricity and all. ;)

So, is the mind metaphysical?
Depends what you mean by 'metaphysical'.

I guess “sapiens” are the luckiest ever.
If you consider sapience to be a good thing, then yes, we are.

Indeed:

But you do see a connection between the brain and mind, right?
Of course. Alter the brain's chemistry, and the mind is equally altered.

Beyond the physical.
Which begs the question: what is the 'physical'? What differentiates something 'physical' from something 'metaphysical'?

I said "build roofs", not make a mess of somebody's own. :)
The point stands: evolution has equipped various bird species with the capability to build nests in shelters, be it beneath foliage, underground, or in handy man-made outcrop.

Can I be made to alter my decision every time?
Every time what? I don't understand the question .
