Instead of trying to lean on supposed rational explanations for God, looking to the philosophers that have attempted the same, it is always best to just say; I believe what I do on faith and personal experience and let it go at that.

But I bet Received doesn't want to do that because he wants to pretend his belief is based on logical evidence. He just doesn't want to question that belief in a way that gets him off his script because then the belief is in danger. His belief drives his evidence as opposed to the proper way: evidence drives knowledge.

And what is faith? What we use when we lack any other good reason to believe something. =)

I think it is quite normal, for those with a faith belief, to go through efforts to rationally and logically support their faith belief to themselves. In fact, I believe, it is the people with a higher degree of intellect, that go through this process, because their higher intellect, is likely in the background saying; hey, why do you believe what we do again?

When you see these justifications taking place, that appear to be the believer claiming they have some logic and reason for their beliefs, it really is not an attempt to convince you of the logic, but an attempt to convince themselves, they are using some reason and logic.

Just my opinion.

I agree wholeheartedly. I'm sure I went through the same process. Talking to Received in five years would probably be a very different experience.

Well, when you can understand the motivation behind each posters position, it becomes easier to digest.

Blue, you are blind as a bat. I've been pushing off a response because you've been incredibly rude with your superfluous ad hominem attacks, as evidenced by the emotional charge of your posts and, you know, appealing to my "scared" factor, among other things. And you're damn right I've responded with superfluous posts, only because you started them.

Wake up, and learn to control your emotional responses.

And if you can't say what you're going to say to my or anyone's face (and remember that I'm the one surging with testosterone because of hormone replacement), please reconsider.

Just a little observation that can be scientifically validated here:

When I act like a smart alec to posters, it's only on the condition that they started it, and I try my hardest to keep any defensive smart alecery to the thread in which it's a defense from.

With the exception of people who really deserve it, like quatona or Davian.

:smirk: If you had to choose between knowing god doesn't exist and being unhappy... or believing in a god when none exists and being quite happy....which would you choose?

I got this from your two children question on page two. I'm curious if you'd choose the blissful ignorance you seem to favor in others for yourself.

You're wicked!

What would I do in that situation? Not choose until hopefully something else happened, because to me knowingly accepting something you know isn't the case clashes heavily with wanting to be happy. If it was between choosing to believe (not know) that God doesn't exist and be unhappy or not believe and be happy, I'd go with the latter any day of the week.

Oh, I'd say it to your face without a problem. Looks like I touched a nerve. Let me know when you're ready to answer those questions. It would be so much easier than pretending other people are getting emotional in the least.

Logic and reason are always the only defenses. If I were you, I'd use them in a few months when you answer the questions. Or, if you prefer, just try to answer the questions in your head and see if you could do it... heck, it might make it easier.

Yes, you touched a nerve. Something tells me I'm not the only one whose nerves you've touched. Score one for Received for being human and having nerves.

Do you have autism? I'm serious. Because otherwise, no, logic and reason aren't the only defenses.

Keep going. I want you to keep pushing with these responses. Yes, they're much more entertaining than responding to your questions (which, you know, I originally did). Don't disappoint me.

Do you have autism? I'm asking seriously. Because otherwise, no, logic and reason aren't the only defenses.

Okay, what else is a valid defense in a debate? And no, I'm not autistic that I'm aware. I'm very artistic though if the mood hits me right.

Other people are talking about you not being able to respond to the original questions. It would appear that you think yourself highly esteemed while we just see you as a jester.

Answer the questions and let's get on with it =)

How do you know we're talking about "God"? Perhaps we're talking about a god. Perhaps we're talking about a non-personal creator. When you say God, you likely bring baggage with the term. Is this the Judeo-Christian god, Yahweh, or is this just any ol' generic god?

I never knew they'd scare you page after page to the point you can't answer them.

Lol, goodness. "But other people are thinking you're a big silly too!." That's the most cogent argument I've heard on these boards.

Okay, you win.

I'll answer your questions.

Are you saying any monotheistic conception is really polytheistic because there are different conceptions? Why or why not?

I even added another question free of charge.

Lol it's a simple choice...truth or happiness. You can have one but not both. Thankfully it's not representative of real life... Im just asking if you had to choose between the two, which would you choose?

From your post about the children, you make it sound like you'd choose happiness. Yet, I find it difficult to think that's what you'd choose for yourself

No, because I'm not saying anything. I'm asking questions to determine your position. I've been trying to get an answer for pages. Let me know when you will answer them.
