I am definitely digging Asian horror at the moment, especially since all America has been churning out lately is gory torture-porn which I refuse to see (I viewed the first Saw film and didn't dislike it, as it wasn't as gory as I expected, but I will never see movies like Hostel or The Hills Have Eyes). Of the Asian horror movies I've seen, they seem to concentrate more on psychological terror and supernatural mysteries rather than teenage chase-scenes and gory killings.
Anyway, my absolute favorite Asian horror movie is Ringu. It was chilling and definitely spooked me! I saw the American remake before the original, and consider it a gem, too! Following Ringu is Dark Water. It was, in some aspects, an even better film that Ringu, although it was more of a drama than a scary movie. Once again, the American version of that film with Jennifer Connolly is superb, and another favorite!
The Grudge was just okay. It was highly stylized but the storyline was a bit confusing and once the shock would subside from the film's multiple jump-scares I would realize how ridiculous the "ghosts" actually were. And when I thought back over the movie, I realized it was pretty much a slasher movie with ghosts as the killers instead of chainsaw-wielding psychopaths. Overall I'm not as impressed with The Grudge, nor the original Ju-On, as I am with other Asian horror movies. Again, I didn't hate either film; they were just passable, and it remains a mystery to me why, exactly, they are such huge phenomenons.
While wholy unimpressed with the yearly "AfterDark Horrorfest" movies that come out every year, I found one by the director of Ju-On/The Grudge that I actually enjoyed. It was a film called Reincarnation, and while definitely strange and a tad bit confusing, it pulled off a creepy, sinister atmosphere and housed some rather memorable scary moments. It also has a good twist.
That's all the Asian horror cinema I've seen. I'm interested in Audition, but I think it might be too gory for my liking. Could anyone tell me how bloody/vicious it is without spoiling it?
I'm a member of Netflix and currently I have the other two films in the Ringu series (Ringu 2 and Ringu 0, a sequel and prequel respectively) in my Queue, along with A Tale of Two Sisters (have heard nothing but praises for this one) and the original versions of The Eye and Shutter. (I have yet to see the American remake of Shutter, but own Jessica Alba's The Eye and was surprisingly not disappointed. I thought it was a good, fairly screepy, film). Can't wait to see them!
