  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Battle Royale is pretty good :)

I did like the Ring better than Ringu, but I still like Ju-on better than the Grudge.

There's a new one coming out from the Producers of The Ring and the Grudge (both of which I am proud to say Nienor I saw before you. HA! :p lol. Usually you're the one who sees things before me so I am proud of myself. :D ) it's called Shutter. I want to go see it. Is it an American remake? I also have the issue with my boyfriend. Being Eastern he grew up with ghosts like Samara, and the Grudge Boy in his culture, and those movies don't scare him, whereas he goes to watch the Omen and can't sleep, while I'm asleep as the movie is playing.
I understood the Grudge better than Ju-on, but dividing Juon to make the Grudge and The Grudge 2 was a BIG mistake.
I'm too scared to see Ringu...lol.

Yeah, I'm really excited to see Shutter, but now that I've made my friend at school terrified of Asian horror, I no longer have anyone to watch it with. Sadface.

I'm still looking for a movie that scares me - I've seen ones that surprise me, gross me out, and even shock me, but I've yet to find a scary one. I think I may just be too desensitized :p

I haven't see Grudge 2....and I don't really want. I'd rather see the other Ju-On movies.

Ringu wasn't any worse than the Ring, and I actually think I liked the Ring better.

(I'm working on catching up on movies :p I just can't watch a lot of them when I'm at home, and when I'm at school I'm busy...:( But I am working on it! The problem is the more movies I see, the more movies I find out about that I want to see. I believe there are 296 movies on my to see list at the moment, haha)

Ooh, did anyone mention the Tale of Two Sisters yet? I've just seen it, it's a South Korean psychological horror film. Pretty good, with a nice twist. Not what I was expecting at all, but well worth a look if you can find it.

I recently saw The Maid/Kimyo na sakasu (2005) and it is now my favorite Ghost story film. It has English dialog with just a small amount of subtitles, like the few times there are large groups of Chinese people together.

Lots of jumps in this one!

I am definitely digging Asian horror at the moment, especially since all America has been churning out lately is gory torture-porn which I refuse to see (I viewed the first Saw film and didn't dislike it, as it wasn't as gory as I expected, but I will never see movies like Hostel or The Hills Have Eyes). Of the Asian horror movies I've seen, they seem to concentrate more on psychological terror and supernatural mysteries rather than teenage chase-scenes and gory killings.

Anyway, my absolute favorite Asian horror movie is Ringu. It was chilling and definitely spooked me! I saw the American remake before the original, and consider it a gem, too! Following Ringu is Dark Water. It was, in some aspects, an even better film that Ringu, although it was more of a drama than a scary movie. Once again, the American version of that film with Jennifer Connolly is superb, and another favorite!

The Grudge was just okay. It was highly stylized but the storyline was a bit confusing and once the shock would subside from the film's multiple jump-scares I would realize how ridiculous the "ghosts" actually were. And when I thought back over the movie, I realized it was pretty much a slasher movie with ghosts as the killers instead of chainsaw-wielding psychopaths. Overall I'm not as impressed with The Grudge, nor the original Ju-On, as I am with other Asian horror movies. Again, I didn't hate either film; they were just passable, and it remains a mystery to me why, exactly, they are such huge phenomenons.

While wholy unimpressed with the yearly "AfterDark Horrorfest" movies that come out every year, I found one by the director of Ju-On/The Grudge that I actually enjoyed. It was a film called Reincarnation, and while definitely strange and a tad bit confusing, it pulled off a creepy, sinister atmosphere and housed some rather memorable scary moments. It also has a good twist.

That's all the Asian horror cinema I've seen. I'm interested in Audition, but I think it might be too gory for my liking. Could anyone tell me how bloody/vicious it is without spoiling it?

I'm a member of Netflix and currently I have the other two films in the Ringu series (Ringu 2 and Ringu 0, a sequel and prequel respectively) in my Queue, along with A Tale of Two Sisters (have heard nothing but praises for this one) and the original versions of The Eye and Shutter. (I have yet to see the American remake of Shutter, but own Jessica Alba's The Eye and was surprisingly not disappointed. I thought it was a good, fairly screepy, film). Can't wait to see them!

Kwaidan is pretty good. The film consists of a series of vignettes--short stories that are unrelated to each other.

Yes, it is a brilliant film based on a brilliant collection of Japanese folktales based collected by Lafcadio Hearn. I epecially love the Mimi-Nashi-Hoichi segment, closely followed by the Yuki-Onna segment which stare my favourite actor Nakadai Tatsuya.

I also loved Kwaidan. It is hard for me to choose a favorite of the stories, but

'Hoichi the Earless' probably has the edge.

Be aware that the Criterion -DVD version is 20 minutes shorter than the Homevision VHS or the Eureka version(region 2) DVD from Amazon UK. ! Yes, the Criterion cut ditches the 'Yuki-Onna' segment which starred Nakadai Tatsuya! CRAZY! The Eureka! release is the best DVD you can get and comes with a nice booklet which includes the Hearn stories which Kobayashi decided to adapt. Only two stories - 'Yuki-Onna' and 'Mimi-Nashi-Hoichi' - are actually from Hearn's 'Kwaidan' an the other two - 'The Black Hair/Reconciliation' and 'In A Cup Of Tea' - are from Hearn's 'Shadowings' and 'Kottō: Being Japanese Curios, with Sundry Cobwebs', respectively.

The booklet also includes and interview with Kobayashi and an English translation of the Heart Sutra (which is featured in 'Mimi-Nashi-Hoichi').

'Kaidan' is a great film and I wish a series of films based on the stories in 'Kaidan' and Hearn's other works could have been made. I would have loved to see adaptations of 'Jikininki', 'Oshidori', 'Diplomacy', 'Rokurokubi' and 'The Dream of Akinosuke' and 'Story of A Tengu'.
