I was considering the quote, too. Yes, we should live as if Jesus were coming back tomorrow (in our holiness before God and consistency of our lives in Christ), but should also plan for the future just in case He decides to delay a couple of hundred years more.
As for the original subject of this thread, just look at what the Dow Jones has done since earlier this year. From a high of 13,136.69 to a low just last week at 6469.95, it's clear that an economic implosion is definitely taking place. People put too much faith in the stock market, and those who put too much in are literally paying the price. Even the y2k bug, both caused by and cured by our Aspie brother Bill Gates and Microsoft, was nothing compared to what's happening now. This is different from the 1930s Great Depression in that much of our money is based purely on faith rather than on gold as it was back then.
Why is this depression happening? Here's my opinion. First, there's an ungodly sense of entitlement that people have. They want to live better with less quality work. No protestant work ethic taught in school, no protestant work ethic--well you guessed it--at work. Then capitalism at its golden best (sarcastically spoken here): oil companies raising prices--because they could get away with it. Then people with credit/debit cards buying (still abundant in most places) full tanks of gas for their gas guzzler vehicles, paying $4.00/gallon instead of $1.50/gallon. Fixed budget minus 2-3 times gasoline money minus mortgage payment = negative balance = bounced checks. A few hundred foreclosures banks can handle, a few million... The big bucks banks just couldn't handle it; stockholders sold off, and credit became very tight. Oil companies tried to pull a "Bill Gates" and rescue us from the problems they caused to begin with (in part, of course) by lowering crude oil prices, but too late. Now we have a new president and congress who have managed more deficit spending in 1 1/2 months than our previous president did in the prior four years. With 2 trillion $ more deficit than ever, what sort of economic ruin will our children inherit? Will China or Saudi Arabia own the US, UK, or other western (nominally Christian) nations? Will the antichrist save the day?
Yep, we'd better pray that God helps us be ready for a Depression, perhaps one that will not resolve short of direct divine intervention. We had WW II to help us get out of the prior one. What's the option now? A nuclear war??? It would cure the depression all right--yeah by having no people to be in an economic depression! Remember Jesus' warnings about the last days. Pray, as He instructed us to, so the days are shortened for the sake of the elect (us).
My wife firmly believes that there will be valued places for Aspies (like me) in even a dystopian society, as our special areas of expertise (or at least problem solving skills) will be valuable assets. Consider how our genetic traits survived throughout the centuries. If having an autistic spectrum disorder was all bad, wouldn't it be logical that society would have eliminated our tendencies from the human genome? ASDs seem to be heritable, so we've always had a place in this world both in good times and in bad times. By God's grace, if this time coming up is a bad time, then we'll again make it through. Perhaps, we'd even be much more welcome in a desperate society who needs the creative approach of someone who thinks so far out of the box, he/she doesn't even know where the box is.
Before getting too alarmed about my post, just try to remember that the Lord loves us and wants as many people saved as possible. If it means the consequences of our world's collective stupidity are held back by the merciful hand of God, all the better. It may provide time for more to be saved. However, if He's fed up with the sin in this world, He may just let the world reap what it has been sowing lately--but He'll keep us safe somehow--the Bible promises that.
God bless.
