Arguing/Fighting on the Internet

Everybody does it, I've been guilty of it myself and most likely will be again. Overall, though, I think that CF has done me more good than harm. I have changed a lot (in a good way) in the past year and I think at least some of that has been due to getting to interact with other Christians here on CF.

Well when people are thick and just decide to make assumptions....that is what intiates arguments...

I've noticed there are a few people who are almost constantly critical of others (and not in a constructive way). If one were to go to these folks' profiles and click on "find all posts", one would see that nearly every single post they have made has something negative in it. It is like they are trying to bait people into arguments and responding to them is rather like giving them a cookie.

i haven't had any personal arguments with anyone here... sure there's been tension once in a while (just be a mod and you'll see what i mean! lol), but I try to keep it all in perspective and practice charity. debates aren't' the same as personal arguments though... you are not speaking of debates though right?

Yeah, and I have to remind myself not to hand out the cookies. It gets tough not to respond sometimes, especially if the post is personal and/or hurtful.

In my experience, many interesting discussions have instead become debates, and many dignified debates have become arguments. The arguments are where it gets personal and hurtful.

Personally, I like to be able to discuss ideas without necessarily taking a side in a debate, but that seems to be a difficult position to carve out in many threads. But that is different from when it gets ugly -- basically, when a debate turns into an attack.

I try my best to avoid aurguemts/confrontations. I just do not handle them well.

I am guilty as well of getting "hot" on the internet.

However if I am being irrational and stupid I hope someone would put the heat on me to make me see the error of my ways.

I think I am getting better at it, too, compared to when I first joined CF or even a few weeks ago.

No, I'm not talking about debates. I am talking when a person will randomly say something rude and assumptive about another person or group of people and then other members of CF respond because they are offended, and eventually the thread usually ends up having the mods close it at least once.

I guess what was going through my mind when I made this thread was that I've seen so many people decide to quit CF over arguments or people posting hurtful things. I think that is too bad.

I have been there, but at that point everyone should realize they need a break.
