• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I have a major pet peeve with people making nasty comments about eating disorders! Just the other day, we were driving down the road and saw a very thin woman. My mom goes "Gross she's too thin. Shes like anorexic. nasty!" and my brother yelled "Ew gross!". It made me want to knock the both of them out.

My friends make nasty comments about it frequently too (they dont know about my anorexia...but come to think about it...they would make them anyway if they knew. They're just that great. wow different topic. anyway...)it really gets on my nerves. No one seems to understand the struggle that an eating disorder is! Its not just a simple choice...its more an addiction and so, so hard to break.

I'm having such a hard week with it, so I'm even extra edgy about it. :sigh:

I know exactly what you mean, yes, now that I am in recovery I can see how being too skinny can appear gross, but I will never say it outloud. People dont always understand and so they dont know how to react. This usually follows with making light of something deadly serious! Which is not a good thing and thus why it is also one of my petpeeves.

I really understand what you are talking about. My exhusband used to make all sorts of comments about eating disorders, mental illness, and stuff like that. My family suffers from a lot of mental illnesses, and I have the binge eating disorder and alcoholism in my repertoire of addictions. We would have all out wars.

The stupid thing was, I am obese. He would tell me I have to lose weight. I would go to OA, come home and tell him I was giving up sugar, as it is a trigger for me to binge. The next day, he would eat ice cream and tell me to taste how good it is and put the spoon in front of my face. I wanted to hit him with the whole carton of ice cream. Then he would deny he was undermining me.

Sorry to ramble about that. Anyway, my best suggestion is to work on your self-esteem, and learn about your eating disorder and how to recover from it. Once you do that, you can better educate the ignorants in your world of the real problem. Also, realize that it has only been in the last 30 years or so that the mental health gurus have come to see that eating disorders are a psychiatric issue. And even then, binge eating disorder is not listed at an eating disorder by itself. Just anorexia and bulimia are true eating disorder diagnoses.

Yeah my parents are that way. We will be watching tv, and a super skinny girl will come on and mom will be all "EWW! She is anorexic! that is gross! I just don't understand how girl would ever thing that is pretty!" I hate hearing things like that. I mean my parnets don't know that I stuggle with eating problems, but I still hate heard those things.

My parnent are aways talking about weight anyways tho. They are always dieting, and all they ever really buy is diet foods. and I don't know but that doesn't help me, because it makes me think about my weight more.

I am sorry that you are having a hard week  take care of yourself love
