  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Are you hoarding?

My wife and I have always bought in bulk and stocked up. The difference this year is we have planned a container garden and bought more lentils, rice and canned beans (chick peas, etc).

Yours in the Lord,

that was the original diet of the human race according to the creator, and will be the diet in Heaven (death no more)

Full disclosure I have been a vegetarian since 1979

A bunch of us were sitting around talking about foods when the topic of cheese came up. One fellow said that he didn't eat cheese, to which my brother responded sympathetically, "You poor guy." ;)

No, just buying as normal. It's still pretty crazy around here and people are doing some odd things to get around the buying limits, but I already had a fairly well stocked house for most things so I can do without/get creative with other items people seem not to care for if need be.

I overstocked beans, lentils, quinoa, buckwheat, rice and corn flour. Normally I have 30 days worth of staples. Went to the supermarket for the first time in nine days Friday. There was plenty of food. There was toilet paper. I bought mainly fruits and vegetables. I left hoping to avoid going to the supermarket for 14 days. I wore a face mask. I washed my hands after getting home. I disinfected door knobs.

The Mormons are supposed to store a years’ worth of food. I did not hoard that much.

I have to admit to 'stocking up' on a few things as I think there will be shortages for awhile. As I have a sinus condition I am hoarding Kleenex, as well as my favorite coffee, peanut butter, and bread.

Some things I buy differently than I used to. If it's something I use regularly and has a long shelf life .... if's it's packaged in a bigger quantity ... I buy it that way ... where before I would buy in smaller packaging. Our stores have signs up on certain items limiting the quantity and I abide by that. I go to town about once every week and 1/2 to two weeks ... but lived that way anyway because I am somewhat remote. Really not too much change in the way I live.

I have 6 months of emergency food but have built that up over a few years.

Business' in my area are opening up more and more as time goes on and are controlling the amount of people they allow in at a time and adhering to sanitizing everything and social distancing of 6 feet .... majority of people are adhering to that.

COVID doesn't scare me but scared people do. Especially now that some meat processing plants have closed, yikes, that means a break or slow down in the supply chain. I'm lucky to live in a small city near roadside butcher shops, chicken farms, etc.

We have a good size stash of Toilet paper and paper towels but as far as food
we are buying just as much as usual. Its not easy finding all the usual things we buy
at the grocery store so we have been buying alot more things we dont usually get.

My store has lots of beef but the chicken display is getting smaller.

I tried to go to Costco yesterday. Stood in the longest line I had ever seen for 30 minutes (I got to the store an hour before they opened) only to discover I was in the wrong line, I was in the line for first responders. That is when I discovered the "real" line which utterly blew my previous record for longest line (only lasted for 30 minutes). I would have needed a drone to get a reasonably good picture of this line winding around the parking lot. I left.

It is impossible to order online from either Costco or Amazon.com, they have no delivery dates.

So no, not hoarding.

I’ve ordered several items from Costco and food through Instacart. It was delivered that evening.

The same is true for Amazon. I fill my cart for Whole Foods and leave the page open. Check back periodically and refresh. A slot will appear.

As for the question, I did a one and done run to Costco and hit two Whole Foods stores (our shelves were bare) and another grocer in my area. I have not returned to the stores since that time.

I order everything online and work with farmers to purchase meat, fruit and vegetables in bulk. I bought a freezer to accommodate the extras. We have our water delivered and use a dehydrator or preserving for extended shelf life.

Now I’m replenishing the bar and stocking up on wine and mini bottles of champagne.

Youre much better off hoarding stuff that no one else wants. Because its always easy for you to find.
Right, that is how I shop now, just grab whatever is available, forget the list, waste of time.

My answer is no; and I don't think hoarding behavior is appropriate for Christians. The Lord taught us not to be anxious about our basic needs because God knows them and is faithful to supply them. Jesus taught us to pray for our daily bread, not our bread for a month.

God wants our trust to be in Him, not in our goods. He is our Resource at all times; and not trusting Him not only hurts and angers Him but also prevents us from seeing Him act on our behalf as He would if we did trust and obey, which experiences bolster and increase our confidence in Him for the future.

When the people of Israel tried to store up manna, instead of taking their daily portion for their needs, it bred worms and stank. God was trying to teach them to rely on Him, to trust Him and take Him at His word, and their hoarding demonstrated their unbelief (and greediness besides).

In addition, we're not supposed to be jealous for our lives in this world. We're sojourners here; citizens of the eternal kingdom to which we are supposed to be looking forward. When we start thinking of ourselves as citizens of this world, rather than as sojourners in it, our heart attitude and priorities need a readjustment.

Jesus said that where our treasure is, our hearts will be also, and told us not to lay up treasures on earth but rather in heaven.

A Christian who is afraid of death and who would rather prolong his days on the earth as much as possible, rather than wanting to be away from the body and at home with the Lord, is doing something wrong in his Christian walk and needs to do some self-examination to find out why his actions and attitude aren't the same as those of Christ and His apostles.

When you go to the grocery store and the shelves are empty it isn't because of hoarding.

1. No one rushed to buy toilet paper causing it to run out. Who would even think of toilet paper. It turns out that the industry is run on a "just in time" manufacturing process, and the toilet paper that we use at home is not the same as the ones they sell to business. When everyone stayed home there wasn't enough and they were already running the machines at full capacity.

2. Farmers, Meat packers, Dairy have all had their supply chains disrupted. My brother has a farm, 40% of his sales went to a university that closed. Now what does he do with 40% of his milk? He doesn't have anywhere to store it, milk is perishable, and the cows have to be milked. So what choice do you have. You can't throw away 40% of your product and not think there will be shortages in the stores.

3. Already the big meat packers like Tyson have made it clear that closing their plants will cause a major shortage.

This is not about hoarding.

Interesting so many plants suddenly had epidemics within hours/days of each other. Who will ultimately benefit is always the question about anything that occurs.

Or you could ask who will go bankrupt, because starting in July I expect we will see a tsunami of bankruptcies.

You could call it that but I think it will be more like extermination of competition or cheap buy ups of competitors. Corporate cannibalism has not gone into quarantine. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top as usual after this event is over. Re-adjusting the market doesn't always mean attacking outside sources.
