  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Strider! I think we've known each other for quite some time. And I've seen a few pictures of you, but this is the first without a hat!
You have a very friendly face and look just as dapper without the hat :)

Not myself, but my girls :)

Off for their afternoon milking. I'm just sat on the quad bike letting them walk in their own time.

Wow, they are lined up 2x2, following the fence. are they trained to do that, or are there dogs/people keeping them in line?

No, just me. Dairy cattle are creatures of habit. What they learn they learn from routine. Some of the older cows know their way back to the farm from fields two miles away.

They're not stupid by any means.

I didn't say they were stupid.

so it sounds like you trained the older cows, and as new cows and younger cows were acquired, they just followed the lead of the older cows until one day...

Although, now that you say it. If they were human, this sort of behavior...

nonetheless, it is pretty cool that they do that. These cows look grass-fed.

edit: I always thought that cows were milked very early in the morning?

They're out grazing for as long as possible (typically March through to November), and then fed on a 50:50 maize/grass silage ration in the winter.

And I milk twice a day. The morning milking is 4am and the afternoon milking is anywhere between 2pm and 4pm. (Whenever I can be bothered really. PM is flexible)

In the autumn and winter I start well before 4am. Those are the crucial months, and there's a lot to do in the morning before you even start milking.

Are you related to Temple Grandin?

LOL.

I'm a huge admirer of her work. I had the chance to meet her at an expo last year but I didn't go.

Silly me really.

I can't figure out how to post a picture.

You can either link to it with the icon that looks like a mountain with a sun in the left corner, next to the smilie or you can upload it by using the button under the post box next to the post reply button.
