I had a friend of mine challenge me last night. We were talking about a lot of things, nothing heavy, just enjoying conversation. Out of nowhere he says, Shannon, are you afraid of God?

John: Shannon, are you afraid of God?
Shannon: define afraid. Do you me scared or do I fear God?
John: scared

My initial response was no. It only took a few seconds to realize that I hadn't truly thought about it. It was a hard question to answer.

So, my question to you--- Are you afraid of God?

Think about it.

Well, i used to be afraid. I used to think of standing before Jesus and begin to be very afraid. But now, the more i read the word of God, the more i realize that fear is not from God. According to Heb 4:16 "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need."
And in Eph 3:12, "(Jesus), in whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him."
Again, in Heb 10: 19 "Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus...let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith."
You see, the fear can come from sin, knowledge of sin in our lives that we don't want to deal with, lack of understanding of God's word, or from the devil.
When you deal with any known sin in your life on a day to day basis, keeping yourself pure and unspotted from the world, you can draw near with the assurance of your faith. Then if there is any fear, the source is the wicked one, and needs to be rebuked. God is greater than our fear, and perfect love casts out all fear.
Remember, the basis of our relationship with God is the blood of Jesus, but we also need to display the fruits of repentance for our part. As James puts it, "faith without works is dead."
Hope this helps.
peace.

I'm not afraid of God in the sense that He will punish me for every little thing I do wrong. I understand His grace better than that. If I am afraid, it is of me not depending on the resources that He has given me to godly life which would result in missing out on His best for me.
I am aware that He does discipline His own and that I really prefer not to go through that, but ultimately, I'm not afraid of God because He is doing it to help me grow in relationship with Him, so I really believe it is me that I fear the most, because to disobey Him is my doing and not His. He has given me everything pertaining to a godly life and I would be foolish not to use it.
Having said that, I am VERY grateful that He provided a means for escape and that is the gift of His Son.
