It says in James 'the demons believe and tremble. Many come down the isle, saying they believe, only to find out later that they were not really saved. They did not have a true conversion expereince and did not truly repent [turn away from] their sins.
I think that many hear John 3:16 and think that they are going into the pearly gates. The amplified Bible gives this, imo, very misunderstood verse a different slant.
John 3:16 For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up his only (unique) Son, so that whoever believe in (adheres to, trusts in,clings to,relies on) Him shall not perish -come to destruction, be lost-but have eternal (everlasting) life.
v18- He who believes in Him- who clings to, trusts in, relies on Him-is not judged (he who trusts in Him never comes up for judgement;for there is no rejection, no condemnation;he incurs no damnation) But he who does not believe (not cleave to, rely on, trust in Him is judged already; he has already been convicted) because he has not believed on and trusted in the name of the only begotten Son of God--He is condemned for refusing to let his trust rest in Christ's name.
MY words- I walked the isle at the age of 8 and thought that I was saved. I was no different coming out of the waters than going in, because it was a 'head' belief. At age 23 I had a true conversion experience and bammm on came the lights. I became so hungry for God, I could not get enough of fellowship, prayer, Bible study, getting into the word. So hungry was I that I read the Bible straight through in 3 months. I say this to describe the hunger.
I have not always had this intense hunger, but when it wanes, God puts a pastor, missionary, spiritual friend in my path to give me back this hunger. A friend recommended this forum to me, that I did not know existed...Praise God, the hunger is back.
Paul said 'what do you have that was not given to you?' This keeps me humble. When God's gifts flow, it helps me to focus on and remember the source and to remember that it is nothing special about me. It is Him that is special, not me.
