  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If there is alien life then the universe must be buzzing with radio activity for millions of years yet nothing not even a commercial.

an alien lifeform that had intelligence could be 500 million years advanced so that gives a lot of space for signal to reach us (more than enough in our own galaxy) yet we only receive cosmic produced noise. Chances are that we are alone.
Perhaps God made the Earth his unique place.

Unless micro-organisms can use thier own teeny weeny radio devices and engage in teeny weeny radio chat shows, then I don't think anyone is expecting radio signals from that kind of life, I guess you were talking about intelligent life. In that case you must take into consideration many things, such as the amount of time it would take for radio signals to reach us, the chances of intelligent ET life transmitting radio signals that we can detect and many other variables. They could of probably sent us a signal back in the 1800's but we wouldn't of been able to detect it. We have only had radio technology for about 80 years(I think) and compare that to the amount of time humans have been around then you will see that intelligent ET life has only had a small window of opportunity to send us a signal that we would be able to listen to.

What I find strange though, is the fact that if God created this massive universe with billions of galaxies full of billions of solar systems and only used 1 ickle planet to tease his only creations on...then whats the point of creating all those lovely planets orbiting other stars? Isn't that a bit of a waste of space? Or where they created so the hubble telescope can give me even prettier desktop wallpapers? Anyway, if I was God I would consider chaning the size of the universe, who wants a load of spare dark matter and vacuum anyway?

but if there are supposed to be 1000's of M class planets in this galaxy and there are millions of galaxies then there should be at leasts 1000's of intelligent lifeforms. Universe is supposed to be 13-15 billion years old so that is a lot of time for intelligence to be around. Why is Earth so rare?

And so what God made the universe big. Probably to keep it ticking in the universal laws you muster after.

M class?
Isnt "M" based off of a vulcan word?

Anyway. See the problem is that even if there have been intelligent lifeforms, time and distance seperates them.

We have had interstellar radio comunication for less than 100 years (I believe). In that 100 years we have had more than one close call about blowing ourselves up. So we are actually rather lucky. We have been looking for less than 100 years.

This makes the chances of finding alien life through radio transmissions very slim.

Also, the more advanced a civilization gets, the bigger chance they will end up destroying themselves. So the longer they go, the bigger chance they wont last too long. :)

Arikay, so is all intelligent life programmed to self destruct?

M class planets was used by mathematicians I think in the 50 or 60's to calculate how many planets could possess life supporting conditions.
Star Trek uses it also.
It is mentioned in Carl Sagan's The Cosmos book too.

Yeah, but i think its funny the star trek universe explains it with a vulcan word (I believe).

Not programed. Just the fact that until we split the atom we really didnt have the ability to completly destroy the world. And with what scientists theorize, it may not even be the most powerfull bang we can make (some sort of anti matter, matter explosion, might be one of the biggest). So the more advanced a society gets, the easier it becomes to completly destroy themselves.

I'm sorry, what was the pointless question again?

That would be the one you can't seem to answer:

Do you agree with AiG's theory that Aliens don't exist because if they did, God would've told us?

I can't speak for a sci fi programme.

Why would intelligent life follow the human standard?

Hmmmm..

Well, I guess I really havent cared enough to really think about it much.
I suppose I would have to go with a no, I dont believe thier is any ''intelligent'' life out there.
