Celibate can mean several different things. What exactly do you mean by "celibates"? Are we talking about people who forgo civil marriage? Are we talking about people who forgo coitus? Does a person in a celibate marriage qualify as a "celibate"? Does a person who considers him/herself asexual qualify as a "celibate"?

I don't know how to answer your question. I am a 34-year old heterosexual male virgin who has never been interested in a sexual relationship and has not been interested in marriage since maybe when I was 16 or 17 years old.

I have spent a lot of time in this forum, but it has not been to find support, encouragement or answers in my search for love. It has been to try to figure out what place sexuality, dating, love, marriage etc. have in my life.

I would say that I am practicing celibacy. But I don't know if I am what you call a "celibate". I won't know until I know what you mean by "celibates". I say in my profile that my marital status is "Celibate", anyway.

For more than fourteen years now I have been working on goals that I am convinced preclude marriage, such as my goal of volunteering in the U.S. Peace Corps. But if somebody could assure me that my goals don't preclude marriage, I wouldn't suddenly be looking for love. Marriage, sex, etc. are things that I have never been passionate about.

Hey, if it sounded like I'm yearning for a spouse. That is not what I meant. I really am not in any hurry. I like being single for the time being and I'm fine with whatever God has planned for my life.

I wasn't referring to you.

I just know that there are some single people who want to find "the one" a lot more badly than I do. No one specific.

Well, the way I see it, celibacy isn't limited to single people or those who have taken vows of celibacy/chastity. Married couples can be celibate too - when practicing NFP, if they don't want to conceive, they practice celibacy for about a week per month. Also, in some cases, sexual acts are not possible (such as if one partner is paralized) so couples in those situations practice celibacy. Everyone practices it at some point no matter what their romantic relationship status is.

As to long-term celibacy, I'm considering it. I think my life is going to be pretty hard, and I don't know if it would be right for me to bring someone else in on that. I don't know if it would be responsible. Certainly, she would have to be a strong woman.

I have to say i was relieved to get responses. I am celibate for about 17 years now. I am married, but due to my spouses medical problems am celibate. I believe God is using my celibacy to draw me closer to Him...

Blessing to all of you who are staying pure until marriage! Blessing to those of you who are called to a life of celibacy.

I guess it depends on what you mean by celibate. I never had sex, and I don't plan to have sex anytime in the near future. But I have no idea if I'll ever do it, I guess I'll see...

Apart from that, I'm a single, and I don't think I'm going to have a girlfriend anytime soon. But that's because I'm kinda unpopular... :( I think it would be really nice to have that special someone you love, and who loves you too...

I have been blessed in my celibacy, though it was very hard to get used to. Yeshuah has allowed me a greater compassion and ability to help those who struggle with waiting to get married before engaging in relations and for those who are newly widowed...
