My 3 yr old pretends he can fly, he sticks his arms out and runs around the house making all kinds of swooshing noises (sometimes I join along). I have no idea where he got this from as we haven't exposed him to any superhero genres but never-the-less he does it.

Now the ability for a human to stick his arms out in front of them and begin to fly would be a supernatural ability that a human is incapable of doing themselves. My 3 yr old is not pretending he is in a plane or some other thing that can fly he is pretending he is a super flying version of himself. In order for this to actually happen, he would have to draw this power from another source, good or bad, but I tend to think that's not going through his head (then again I've never asked).

so where do we draw the line? is my 3 yr old committing the sin of sorcery or are their forms of role-playing that even though the abilities are unnatural they are not examples of lusting after power they don't have, competing with God or drawing strength from a dark source. While we're on the subject should I hold off on burning my copy of Lord of the Rings too? Could there possibly be a form of good role-playing?

Thanks! I'll try to Christianize my campaigns a bit more. Maybe the heroes could all be Paladins who try to kill all the sorcerers.

But the NT does not teach violence, though. It teaches non-resistance. Hence, the problem. Even if you were to create a Bible based spiritual warfare game whereby you look to save people in the game, the problem the Dungeon Master would run up against is that they would be acting as God in the game in an interactive way towards others. We cannot role play that we are God for the purpose of entertainment alone. Christian movies are different because they seek to lead others to Christ as it's end goal or to inspire people to follow the Lord. A role playing game is just so as to have fun in one's mind alone and it really does not help people or to truly love them.

This is talking about food and which day to keep the Sabbath, and it is not talking about sinful things pushed in a movie, video game, or role playing game.
In particular, yes. But this principle of exercising charitable judgement toward your brother is not limited to just a few doubtful matters. If God does not condemn it, and you can participate to the glory of God, then who am I to tell you otherwise? We need to be careful not to burden each other with matters that are not clearly mandated in the Word of God.
Establishing rituals that flatter ourselves and matter not to God is a very slippery slope.
Matthew 15:9
in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.

Matthew 16:6
“Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

We need to keep this at the forefront of our minds whenever examining our practices. These Pharisaic tendencies are alive and well within all of us.

My buddies and I like to drink whiskey when we play D&D.

Whiskey is pretty strong. I would find it hard to believe that you guys do not to intoxicated or not drunk on such a thing. The Bible condemns drunkenness, my friend. Also, if your buddies are not Christian (seeking to follow Jesus), then they are truly not your friends. I had a hard time letting go of my secular worldly friends, but I was able to do it with the Lord's strength.

Thank you. My wife likes my sense of humor and I do make people at work laugh. But I always keep the humor clean.

I am glad I was able to help, brother. May all the glory go to Jesus Christ (of course).
Keep praying to the Lord Jesus Christ for strength in putting this thing out of your life and pour yourself into studying and reading the Bible as replacement.

I am against group fantasizing with the end goal of it not going anywhere. If the goal is to create a Christian movie to lead others to Christ and or to inspire them to follow Christ, then that is different.

Fair enough, but why are so you confident it couldn't lead anywhere good? The mind works in funny ways.. inspiration pops up in funny ways.. someone could be engaging in some hobby and then it hits them of an interesting lesson to take from it or even improving upon it and finally offering their thoughts to others.

I'm a musician, for example, and half of the stuff I play is just "exercise" in a way..It's kind of "pointless noodling", to be honest. I go through the motions and then partly get lost in thought while I'm playing.. and only then does some lightbulb pop on in my head. Then the good stuff starts.

Same goes for many things. Inspiration often comes in the midst of another action, when you least expect it.

Shaming people over these pointless hobbies or what they do in their free time is only going to create an insecure or traumatized person, who simply won't share anything with you eventually. This is especially dangerous with a discouraging parent.

No. You either do not understand the nature of role playing games, or you are overlooking the sinful things within them and think it is okay for men to fantasize about doing sinful things in their mind (Which is wrong). Jesus said if we look upon a woman in lust, we have committed adultery in our heart. So the mind sin is the same as the actual physical sin. So if a person fantasizes about being a witch or a sorcerer, they sinning in their mind by fantasizing on the sin of witchcraft. A person should not fantasize or promote sinful things because they are a changed new creature in service to doing good things as a part of loving Jesus Christ. There is no liberty for us Christians to sin. That is not how it works in following Jesus.

Are roleplaying games sinful? Not in the slightest. Now, excuse me, I think might fire up Oblivion here in a moment, and I plan on playing Skyrim sometime this weekend. And yes, I do play mages a lot.

Reminds me, I miss playing D&D. To me, that was nothing more than a chance to get together with friends, socialize, drink Mountain Dew.

Mountain Dew is sinful. I will admit to that.

The problem in even a Bible based role playing game is that it is for pure entertainment alone it is for the consumption of one's lusts. You reap what you sow. If your intention is to sow to others that you want to reach them with the saving message of the gospel, then you will reap it in the time of the harvest. If you sow to only please yourself, and not the Lord, then you will also reap the harvest of that. The Bible does not condone selfish serving behaviors or to seek to make ourselves happy alone. We as believers are to serve and love others. That is the goal of a Christian. To love God and to love others. We are to be selfless and not selfish. Sure, you can play music, but we should dedicate our music to the Lord in the hopes it will help people to draw closer to God.

Jesus says if you look upon a woman in lust, you have committed adultery already in your heart. So the mind sin is no different than the actual physical sin to Jesus.

In the OT, God told the Israelites to kill sorcerers. That should give you an idea of how bad of a sin this was to God. So if a person pretends to be a sorcerer, they are in a sense committing the actual sin in their heart in God's eyes. They are doing evil in their mind. Remember, the flood happened in part because men's thoughts were evil continually. So it was not just the acting of sin that was wrong, but it was their sinful thoughts, too.

Not everything in every waking moment is about interacting with other people. Again, you just sound like an extrovert, and given your own psychological preference a kind of holy sanction that's inherently better than everything else.

But underneath, it's no different than some "popular", worldly people I've met. I knew one guy who was into all kinds of group activities, sports, outdoors, lots of friends.. and he called anyone who play video games "Nofriendo" (a spin on Nintendo). All he was doing was being a jerk. He's no different than, say, the popular kids in a highschool who do this to the "nerds" as well, for not being like them. Only you have made the Lord himself your accomplice. Or at least, have tried to.

I actually consider myself to be more introverted when I was younger when I played role playing games (Which was before I accepted Christ).

Jason could you think of anything besides Bible study or watching Christian movies that isn't sinful?

My mind does not work that way. I want to be in complete service to the Lord Jesus Christ in everything that I do. Loving God and others is always the goal for every day. My own enjoyment? I get them from abiding in the Lord and the fruits of the Spirit.
