I think the kids should wash the dishes and she wants a dishwasher. How do you and yours feel about that?

CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

(giggles) you be in charge of making sure the kids wash the dishes, and don't get her involved! That means no conversations about it within hear shot either!
There are bigger fish to fry in life. Goodness knows there are tons of other chores the kids can be responsible for, and she can be happy as a clam.
Heck - they can load the dishwasher! There! You both got your way. She got the dishwasher, and the kids to STILL do the dishes!

I have a dishwasher and end up washing some of the dishes anyway. Tbh, I like my dishwasher and really don't want to do without it. But....I was glad when my son was young that we went for a time without, so he could actually learn to not rely on one. After all, when he is first out on his own, he might not be able to afford to rent a place where there is one. So he needs to learn those skills. Now he knows how to wash dishes, but he also knows how to load and unload a dishwasher.

First world problem.
Very few of the things we have are necessary. Many of them are very nice to have. If you can afford it, why not let her have the dishwasher. As someone else pointed out, many other places for the kids to have jobs that teach responsibility.
P.S. A dishwasher sanitizes way better then hand washing, IMHO.

I just recently have one again after going 7-8 years without. It's funny but even when I do have one I don't use it that much. They are nice to have though - especially if you have a lot of dishes. If y'all have kids, there are probably enough dishes to justify one. I agree with whoever here said it's good to teach them to hand wash properly AND how to load the dishwasher.

My wife told me over thirty years ago, "Buy me a dishwasher, and you'll never have to wash another dish in your life." Well, I've still helped out with some of the big pots, but for the most part, I haven't even come near a dirty dish.

Necessary? No. Nice to have? Yes.
If you have a dishwasher, you kind of have to half wash them anyway, unless you use a special strong detergent. The kids can do that and load the dishes. We had our kids do that during the summer break. We should probably restart that on light homework nights.
One of the really great things about dishwashers is it gives you somewhere to put wet dishes without having to dry them all at once.

I have a dishwasher but find it's quicker to wash by hand though. I run my dishwasher when there's more dirty dishes than normally, say after having had dinner guests etc.

My husband likes to say the kids and I ARE the dishwashers. Yeah, he barely lifts a finger to help with them!

A lot of it does depend on family size, how many dishes you pile up a day, etc. When I was a single mom, we lived on paper plates, cups, etc. I had a dishwasher, but never used it in 9 whole years of living in our apartment; I hand washed anything that wasn't disposable. But now, my husband LOVES to cook, so we have tons of dishes (pots, pans) every day, so we use the dishwasher.
I see nothing wrong with either option. I grew up hand-washing dishes, and now we have a dishwasher. Frankly, by the time you get done stacking, soaking, scraping, loading and unloading the dishwasher, you could've done them in the sink already. I actually enjoy hand-washing dishes, I find it relaxing. Hubby is dead-set on using the dishwasher though, so that's what we do. I keep thinking of all the electricity we could save if we washed by hand, but I'm outnumbered lol.
It really isn't something to clash with your wife over. Unless you have some really deep, crucial conviction or reason, just get a dishwasher. The kids can still be in charge of the dishes, the thing doesn't load and unload itself

Dishwasher for our family . Maybe once we shrink more it will be more practical to hand wash . The other thing too hand washing uses more water and energy .

We use both the dishwasher and the old fashion manual way on the weekends when the kids are with us. When we make meal there are so many plates, the serving dishes, the pots and pans it won't all fit in one load. So usually we stuff in what we can, and then wash what remains by hand in the sink. Otherwise we do two loads, but the second load will less than half fill the dishwasher.

I grew up with nine siblings and a grandkid in the house as well, we never had a dishwasher!! But I do remember my older siblings sweating over the sink pretty much all the time

I wash dishes by hand, but that's my preference. If she wants a dishwasher, get her a dishwasher. The kids can still help loading and unloading it.

I just got a dishwasher for the first time this past October, and while I love it, it's not necessary.
Of course, if I had lots of kids, I could see it quickly becoming a necessity!
I hated washing all the dishes by hand - it took forever, and in winter my hands would crack and bleed.
So, a dishwasher has definitly made my life easier, and when it comes to kids washing, there's always pots, pants, cutting boards and utensils to wash by hand - I'm sure they'll get more than enough practice even with a dishwasher.
