I hope it is a stretch. People talk as if Hitler came to power in a vacuum. He did not. He came into power during very hard times and he received a lot of support because of his initial steps and thus was encouraged to go farther. It is quite possible that Joe A. has already gone as far as he ever would on his own, but most of us can fall victim to going father than we ever would on our own when the howling mob urges us to.
I see some urging him on.
