I wrote that if that First Christian Church was part of the Disciples of Christ denomination ... There are also some independent Christian Churches that sometimes use the name First Christian. If it was a DoC church, they were not following the denominations's beliefs, because that was been standard policy even then. It sounds like it had more to do with belief that baptism should be by immersion, than which the person was baptised in.

Thanks for expounding as there was no IF in your intial post. And yes, their complaint was that I hadn't been immersed.

I don't think they would accept a Mormon baptism because it wouldn't be considered another Christian church, but I'm not sure. I've only attended a Disciples of Christ church once.

Initially, the early restoration was closely tied to the church that eventually became the Disciples of Christ, as Sidney Rigdon was a Campbellite minister, and he brought his whole flock with him. And he greatly influenced the restoration (that is, until someone else came along (BY)). The RLDS church still has many teachings that are closely related to Campbellite-ism.

Church of Christ denomination would probably re-baptize anyone who had not been baptized to have their sins washed away. They take the phrase "for the remission of sins" to mean that the purpose of baptism is to remit sins.

I just realized I am missing a piece of the puzzle here. Did Sidney Rigdon establish the Disciples of Christ...before or after his affiliation with JSj

Sorry I did not use the word "if" initially. I though that I had. I had thought that it was clear that I did not know for sure what denomination it was when I wrote: Many churches that use the name First Christian Church are part of the Disciples of Christ denomination. I grew up in a DoC church.

Indeed. Adding a trip to www.dictionary.com and understanding that I don't really give a genus Rattus terminal section of the sigmoid flexure about anybodys legalistic requirements pertaining to these particular moments in space and time.

No, he did not. I think that he was involved with a church that was part of the Stone-Campbell movement, but he did not establish the Disciples of Christ. Their history can be read here: http://www.disciples.org/discover/history.htm

Alexander Campbell and his son (or father (don't remember which is which)) started the Campbellite movement. Sidney Rigdon was a big Campbellite minister when he heard of the BoM. He read the book in one night and was converted. He brought his whole congregation with him when he joined.

The Campbellite movement for a while joined with one of the Baptist groups, but they parted ways after a while because of some doctrinal differences, and eventually became the Disciples of Christ.

Hmmm...

He didn't establish it, he was a minister of the Reform Baptist, that they say eventually evolved into the Disciples of Christ.
