Did you read the article? She says "America has moved away from what it should be." I agree with her. America has moved away from our core values as it falls increasingly under the influence of right-wing religious radicalism.

It's highly unlikely that the article was actually read or if it was read then its actual content has been intentionally omitted because it doesn't fit the narrative of this thread to bash Cortez AGAIN.

Let's an honest look at what she actually said unlike the OP ignoring the content of the article.

“What’s really hard for people to sometimes see is that we are on this path of a slow erosion, and a slow slow slow just like — move away from what we’ve always been,” Ocasio-Cortez began by explaining how she feels that America has moved away from what it should be. “You won’t even realize that you’ve drifted a hundred miles.”

She then appeared to suggest that her Democratic Socialist policies represent core American values, arguing that we had just strayed so far from them that we couldn’t recognize them anymore. “So when someone’s talking about ‘our core,’ they’re like, ‘oh, this is radical,’ but it isn’t radical. This is what we’ve always been,” she said.

“I think all of these things sound radical compared to where we are,” she concluded, “but where we are is not a good thing. And this idea of like, ten percent better than garbage, it shouldn’t be what we settle for.”

America was established on Judeo Christian values... these are not the values of the current left. Infanticide anyone?

When was America a more nanny state than it was under Obama? Without articulating what she means by "where we've always been" it sounds like she is for traditional Judeo/Christian values and societal norms... she isn't.

No, America was not founded on Judeo Christian values unless these Christian values include the supremacy of the WASP, legalized slavery, racism and subjugation of minorities, forced Indian removals, and hundreds of violated treaties the U.S. government signed with the tribal nations.

I was referring to the Constitution, not the actions of fallible men. What do you suppose Cortez is referring to that we need to get back to then?

If you are talking about the Constitution, it was founded on the values of Enlightenment rationalism. If "Judeo-Christian" values also informed its composition they were most certainly not the divisive, ugly and unAmerican values of today's Christian Right.

The enlightenment movement or "Age of Reason" of Voltaire et al rejected the notion of God.... think French Revolution. No other system of government was ever premised on all men are equal.. indivisible, under God and that we are endowed by our Creator with inalienable rights.

What do you consider unAmerican about the "Christian right"? Sanctity of life? Worshipping our Creator? The premise of the Ten Commandments?

Speaking of the Constitution, Article VI states: "This Constitution, and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the Constitution or laws of any State to the contrary notwithstanding" (emphasis added). Well, we know that the U.S. government violated the hundreds of treaties it signed with the tribal nations and took tribal lands either by forced removal or slaughter.

Ocasio-Cortez Says ‘Where We Are’ As Americans Is ‘Garbage’

True, seems like we were in a little better condition before she was elected into office.

The Daily Caller is a pathetic excuse for a news site. The article even blatantly lies in the last line.

Here is a more balanced piece on her talk at the SXST:
SXSW: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the New Left

Two months into her first term, Ocasio-Cortez is still taking in the lessons; among them is the insidious subtlety of political influence. “The idea that D.C. is dominated by dark money and lobbyists hiding in closets: ‘Boo, vote for oil!,’ it doesn’t work like that. It’s fascinating to see how subtle these powerful influences really are,” she said. The litmus test to judge the values of politicians, she said, is not just about who didn’t take corporate PAC money but it’s evaluating their consistency on voting and policy decisions.

As a champion of the working class, Ocasio-Cortez noted that Trump’s 2016 faux-populism is a “stark” example of the tactic those in power use to pit white working class Americans against brown and black Americans in order to “screw over” all Americans – but certainly not for the first time. The strategy has long played out since the 70s and 80s, especially under Reagan and his image of the racist caricature “welfare queen.”.......

"The effort to divide race and class has always been a tool for the powerful to prevent working people from taking control,” said Ocasio-Cortez. “Wages have been stagnant for 30 years, wealth is enjoyed by only a small number of people, and the reason is not systemic inequality, it’s not runaway capitalism – the reason is, Mexicans!” Ocasio-Cortez mocked. “They want us to fight over each other when we really need to be zeroing in on the malpractice of governance and how special interests captured the only tool we have to govern ourselves fairly and not at a profit.”

Nation building is messy business.

Did you watch the video? I think a lot of conservatives would agree with what she said. Working class people, who make up the majority of Americans, have been left behind by both the Democrats and Republicans. There was a time when working class people owned their own home and could support a family on one wage. Now it takes two to three jobs for a family to survive. A lot of people find that not far from “garbage,” as AOC said.

That they think of themselves as the only real Christians, the only real Americans, the only real patriots and are hostile and bullying about it, sometimes even violent. I've lived in the Bible Belt, thanks. I don't want to see the rest of the country run that way.

QFT. A lot of these right wing Christians get especially hostile (and even violent) when you refuse to stand during the National Anthem or when you refuse to recite the Pledge of Allegiance or when you hold the American flag upside down during a public protest against a war America is involved in.
